BEIJING Chinas leaders have sought to project confidence in the face of President Trumps tariffs and trade threats, but as it becomes clear a protracted trade war with the United States may be unavoidable, there are growing signs of unease inside the Communist political establishment.
In recent days, officials from the Commerce Ministry, the police and other agencies have summoned executives from exporters to ask about plans to lay off workers or shift supply chains to other countries.
With stocks slumping into bear territory and the currency dropping 9 percent against the dollar since mid-April, censors have been deleting a torrent of criticism online, some of it directed at President Xi Jinpings leadership.
State news outlets, meanwhile, have struggled to stay on message, with the authorities restricting the use of the phrase trade war and coming under attack for going too far in boasting about Chinas economic strengths. Policy disputes over how to bolster the economy have at times spilled into the open.
If the trade war escalates and Mr. Trump has shown no sign of backing down some worry that the publics faith in the economy could be shaken, exposing the nation to much more serious problems than a drop in exports. New economic data on Tuesday showed slower growth in investment and consumer spending, and there are also fears that the financial crisis in Turkey could spread....

I think the biggest “lesson learned” from Trump’s tariffs on other countries is tariffs work/can work.
There has been this great fear of tariffs ever since the Great Depression.
Post-Trump Presidency, there will be a much greater will to use tariffs without fearing the end of the world as we know it.
Tariffs will be second to Trump’s Federal Court appointees as his greatest accomplishments.
It’s capitalism...bitches!
The military brass have family connections to the affected industries.
Que up the famine riot scenes from “The Good Earth”.
In good capitalism “The customer is always right”, and we are the customer.

China will eventually cave. They need us more than we need them.
“some worry that the publics faith in the economy could be shaken, exposing the nation to much more serious problems than a drop in exports.”
yes, there’s always that apocryphal “some” which ANY anti-Trump statement can be hung on by the leftist fake stream enemedia no matter how few “some” are ...
I think that was in reference to the Chinese public, not the American public.
“some worry that the publics faith in the economy could be shaken, exposing the nation to much more serious problems than a drop in exports.”
btw, there’s no chance our economy will be hurt by President Trump’s actions to finally force our trading partners to engage in fair trading practices because President Trump and the GOP Congress made sure policies were implemented to supercharge our economy first. And because our economy is so much stronger than it’s been in decades, it can absorb any small impacts that might occur before our trading partners agree to fair trade ...
They’re talking about Xi’s public in Red China, not Trump’s public here. I have no problem with the Chinese leaders panicking in the face of Trump’s tariffs.
He will not seek to help Xi save face. Xi will have to back down, but Trump will play it nice with him, then.
There’ll be a back-channel series of communiques between them, with terms for Xi saving face discussed. Publicly, this will be carried out to the letter, and they’ll both end up looking good. That’s what happened between Kruschev and JFK re Cuba. Trade? War? Whatever.
Trump’s tariffs, NOT Trump’s war! He’s fighting back in a war that was waged by THEM!
No pun intended right? You are right however. Starving people don’t give a hoot who is in power when their stomachs are rattling and their children are dying. China hasn’t been through a mass famine in over half a century. This isn’t Mao’s China anymore. The Chinese leaders won’t be able to hide what will happen if the people rise up.
Hunger is a powerful weapon. More so then mere words.
