BEIJING Chinas leaders have sought to project confidence in the face of President Trumps tariffs and trade threats, but as it becomes clear a protracted trade war with the United States may be unavoidable, there are growing signs of unease inside the Communist political establishment.
In recent days, officials from the Commerce Ministry, the police and other agencies have summoned executives from exporters to ask about plans to lay off workers or shift supply chains to other countries.
With stocks slumping into bear territory and the currency dropping 9 percent against the dollar since mid-April, censors have been deleting a torrent of criticism online, some of it directed at President Xi Jinpings leadership.
State news outlets, meanwhile, have struggled to stay on message, with the authorities restricting the use of the phrase trade war and coming under attack for going too far in boasting about Chinas economic strengths. Policy disputes over how to bolster the economy have at times spilled into the open.
If the trade war escalates and Mr. Trump has shown no sign of backing down some worry that the publics faith in the economy could be shaken, exposing the nation to much more serious problems than a drop in exports. New economic data on Tuesday showed slower growth in investment and consumer spending, and there are also fears that the financial crisis in Turkey could spread....

Theres 800 million poor people in China
Once theyre hungry the commies are dead meat
It’s NY times.
They are good at producing sophisticated fake news.
Then, you know what to do, China. Drop your tariffs and we'll drop ours. Fair trade is good trade.
The ball’s in China’s court. This could end today if they’ll simply do the right thing.
Yup. They go 2 weeks without making a shipment to Walmart and the entire country is in turmoil. We really hold all the cards, and Trump is proving it.
This trade war should result in China significantly reducing their military budget.
Maybe not.
The ChiComs are very good at killing off tens of millions of their own people to stay in power. They have extremely strong control over almost everything in China.
If the have to resort to extreme measures, their economy is likely to go into the toilet.
When you depend on a partner who buys 4 times as much stuff from you as you do from him, it’s doesn’t take an MBA to realize who is beholden to whom. No other nation on earth can come close to replacing the US as a customer for cheap Chinese goods that keep those millions of rural Chinese from starving like they were under central control. Xi has seriously overplayed his hand the chicom bosses are putting great pressure on him to back down sooner rather than later.
The real question I have is whether Trump will allow Xi to save face or continue to push him in to a corner and break him.
China's socialist government and the will of it's 800 million people makes it the most powerful country in the world! Just ask any slack-wit Leftie!
It's an article of the True Faith that progressive government is more powerful than any racist, fascist, capitalist oligarch 1%er.
And this is the NYT...
Why in the world would Trump back down? He has ALL the leverage.
The commies have the guns.
All they will have to do is say that it is the business people who caused it, have a few "feasts of flesh" and some show trials and the Chinese will happily go back to doing what they do best, take orders from their betters.
It is what they have done for a couple of thousand years now.
It probably will not change.
A good article from a few days ago:
I predict he will allow him to save face.
To Trump, this is just another deal.
He only cares about the goal (fair trade).
The tariffs against Chinese imports are the sticks...ways for Xi to save face are the carrots.
“Trump will allow Xi to save face or continue to push him in to a corner and break him.”

Lol. Break Xi?
Trump has got more chance to break Mueller.
WalMart buyers are ruthless negotiators. China probably loses money on almost everything they sell to WalMart. Walmart sucks in suppliers with promises of a certain level of business that is marginally profitable, then demands far more product at the same price once the supplier ramps up production by increasing capacity. It gets to the point the supplier might feel they are forced into a position to sell more product than they would prefer. It can often lead to bankruptcy.
A lot of smart businesses that sell quality products refuse to do business with WalMart because it would erode the public’s perception of their quality and erode pricing.
The Main Spin Media (MSM) always ignores that China and Europe already had tariffs in place on American goods. They totally ignore that all companies in China are ultimately controlled by the Communist Party.
The ChiComs probably can’t understand why, after a few harsh words, Trump doesn’t back down and fold like Obama, Bush, and Clinton.....
