A Florida Dennys has apologized after a group of black customers were turned away at the restaurant.
Elijah Henderson Jr. told News4Jax that he visited the Lake City Dennys with a group of about 25 members from his church, and was immediately told by an employee that they would not be able to accommodate them.
Henderson said that there were plenty of other groups in the restaurant, and that he thought his group was being discriminated against.
"Is it the color of my skin? That's where I left it at. Is that a problem? Because everybody else was eating and drinking, and she was, like, 'I am not going to be able to accommodate you all, he told the station.
Henderson said that the employee claimed there was only one cashier and one cook working at the time. The employee no longer works at the Dennys, according to News4Jax.
"There was another family that came in right after me, she was, like, 'You guys go ahead and have a seat. I will be with you momentarily, he said.
They are wrong for how they treated us," he added. "Point blank, I don't care what you look like, or where you come from, I just want equality."
Dennys corporate office said in a statement that the incident was unacceptable.
"We were shocked by the unacceptable experience our guests received recently at our Lake City, Florida, location, and sincerely apologize, the statement said. We simply do not tolerate discrimination of any kind in our restaurants."
Henderson also said that Dennys chief operating officer called him to personally apologize.
"He was like, 'Well, I work with a diversity department.' I was like, 'Well, you guys have to do a little more work because it's not working, Henderson said. What you're doing may be working at corporate, but when it drizzles down and comes to the franchisees, it is not working.
These ghetto lottery lawyer settlements cost us a lot in prices and harm to businesses. These people are doing evil.
Remember the restaurant Sambo was owned by Samuel and Bo who started the chain and called it Sambo for Sam and Bo. NOT the stupid Little Golden Book about a half naked African child. Too bad-—outrage and lawyers soon followed them.
The race card. Don’t leave home without it.
That was probably true. Because of rising costs, due in part to government mandates, regulations, taxes and fees, restaurants are cutting back on employees. If you eat out, you might notice that busboys are disappearing and the dirty dishes that they once carried away are now being handled by the waiter or waitress who brings you your food. And it's only going to get worse.
a large smell about it....
I have a hard time believing this refusal was for their race. At least the article doesnt show that race was a factor. Was the other party that got seated also 25 people?
“There was another family that came in right after me, she was, like, ‘You guys go ahead and have a seat. I will be with you momentarily, he said.
Another family of...25+?
Were there 25 members in that family, or even 10-15?
Was Sambo an African child? I thought he was an Indian (subcontinent) child.
Race-baiting POS.
Beat me by 30 secs. :)
He was, and it was a tiger. Not to many of those in Africa.
Next will be the dishwashers. Scrape into trash. Do a fast rinse and reuse.
Not only that, but he wasn't even "BLACK".
Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman (London: Grant Richards, 1899) actually takes place in India. But never mind. It's still highly politically incorrect. I was lucky to be one of the last kids to have become familiar with the original story, before it was dumbed down and repackaged as "Little Brave Sambo" and later vanished from children's literature altogether.
The Sambo's in Los Angeles--I believe it was at around Vermont Avenue and Sixth Street--had some of the best customer service of any restaurant. If you ordered coffee, you would be unable to finish your cup before a waitress came bearing down on you to refill it.
Although the Sambo's chain disappeared in the 1980's, the original restaurant in Santa Barbara, Calif. is still in business.
You are absolutely correct, it was South India. Blacks fought the dark skin of the child as being racist but I was wrong, it as India.
Sorry.
I cant believe this happened at Dennys - Sambos, yes, I could believe that
"Urban" group? Could it be a group of young urban professionals from San Francisco's Nob Hill neighborhood?
Thanks! Interesting history about Sambos - we used to go to one in San Clemente. At 10 pm the place would be full of drunk Marines (god bless em)
To be accurate, The picture of SAMBO at the SAMBO’s restaurants was not ‘black’.
The LITTLE BLACK SAMBO in the children’s tale was depicted as ‘black’ by the illustrators... back in 1899.
its all about the $$$$$$$
