First Lt. Marina Hierl has reportedly made history by becoming the first woman in the Marine Corps to lead an infantry platoon.
The 24-year-old is one of four platoon commanders in Echo Company, a group of 175 Marines and Navy sailors who were recently sent to northern Australia, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Hierl is one of two women to the 13-week Marines Corps Infantry Officer Course, according to the Times.
I wanted to do something important with my life, she told the newspaper. I wanted to be part of a group of people that would be willing to die for each other.
She is now leading a platoon of roughly 35 men for six months of training exercises in the Pacific, the Times reported.
Capt. Neal Jones, commanding officer of Echo Company, reportedly asked for Hierl to be assigned to his unit.

Oh, yeah, she looks FULLY capable of keeping up when it hits the fan.
Did she pass? 130 lbs. pack on a 100 lbs human doesn’t seem like a reasonable engineering ask of human female ankles and knees.
From what I was told she washed out around the fifth month. TBS is about six months long.
Shes one of us, Lance Cpl. Kai Segura said of Hierl.
What else is he(?) going to say to a reporter?
I’m old now and besides, she would have wielded power over every single aspect of my life back then. That’s why we never talked to our officers.
If you are wounded she ain’t going to be any help.
Probably can't carry 120 packs far, but did a fine job of killing ISIS.
Men have more muscle for kicking in doors on an assault, but motivated and trained women can perform most infantry tasks - notably holding positions, which was a main function for YPJ, while the male YPG did most assaults.
Commander of the Operation to liberate Raqqa from ISIS, Rodja Felat:
We had a mustang who had been an enlisted grunt. You would not have known it though. We called him our zero hero. We had a smack ass 8th & I gunny. We called him the EST gunny, he had been in the EST when he was a young Cpl. He was a legend in his own mind. The Corp made him a 1stSgt.
Easing ourselves out of this will be difficult. Wanna make them helo pilots, fighter pilots, even snipers (especially snipers) then go ahead.
Marine infantry? Makes no sense.
Pretty sure that one second from the left sniped the entire 2016 election.
Not only that, if it’s like when I was in she has total control over him.
We were not allowed to do that one around certain areas. Even then.
Even during the war, women were a tiny minority among combat troops, but they did serve in several combat roles, like tankers, pilots, snipers and machine gunners. 89 became Heroes of the Soviet Union (Medal of Honor equivalent). Just the female snipers had over 11,000 confirmed kills.
Senior Sergeant Roza Shanina did not get such a high award, but she is remembered because of the diary she kept during the war, which was later published. As a sniper, she was recognized for her ability to hit moving targets, and to string together doubles (hard with their bolt action rifles). She had 59 confirmed kills, before she had her torso blown open, while shielding the commander of the supporting artillery unit.
I hate it when that happens ...
Bury me deep...
Been awhile...
Why is she allowed to wear her hair that long?
—
Short hair is for people (men) who will actually be in combat, not for rear echelon types who will just add up the body count.
Thanks for the pictures. I could not find any. Find any bikini shots?
“Find any bikini shots?”
Lots
But none of the LT.
