First Lt. Marina Hierl has reportedly made history by becoming the first woman in the Marine Corps to lead an infantry platoon.
The 24-year-old is one of four platoon commanders in Echo Company, a group of 175 Marines and Navy sailors who were recently sent to northern Australia, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Hierl is one of two women to the 13-week Marines Corps Infantry Officer Course, according to the Times.
I wanted to do something important with my life, she told the newspaper. I wanted to be part of a group of people that would be willing to die for each other.
She is now leading a platoon of roughly 35 men for six months of training exercises in the Pacific, the Times reported.
Capt. Neal Jones, commanding officer of Echo Company, reportedly asked for Hierl to be assigned to his unit.

I have always been Army Infantry and women absolutely should not be in the Infantry. It’s like trying to use SAW 5.56 in a M2 .50. Even support units with women have been problematic. The biological factor alone is unsuitable physically, mentally and emotionally. The physical weakness in women is obvious but the mental and emotional make up of men and women together under stress is not conducive to combat. That’s not sexist but reality. I could not imagine a woman Infantry leader let alone a squad/platoon member in Ramadi or Fallujah. Social experiments have no use in the military. There is no shortage of men who can be in the Infantry.
If we keep feminizing the men, all we’ll have is women.
Not always the case.
Sick. Sad to see the destruction of the institution of the USMC infantry.
Me either. I think its a sad day for our Marines
We went to 29 Palms. We were told that main side was strictly off limits to us and we could be court martialed if caught there.
Went to Bridgeport for cold weather training. We were told the px, barracks area, and the areas surrounding it were off limits and we had no business up there. Those mfers had no trouble taking our money at the pickle barrel place they set up to sell us beer and keep us corralled. I talked to a Marine I knew who went to Bridgeport with a non-grunt unit for training. He said they let them have access to the px and that area.
We had severe liberty restrictions on Okinawa and Korea. None of the non-grunt units had them. Went to NTA on Okinawa for training. We were restricted to our area and told we would be court martialed if we were caught in town.
The Corp did not like us much but they kept us around, on a short leash like a bad dog though.
I had a FAP at Camp Courtney on Okinawa, 6 months. I got to see the other side of the Corps. It was good. I was so use to living under a tight leash that I ran off and scammed out of everything I could. It was so easy there. I showed up for work everyday though and the idiots gave me 4.9, 4.9. Something that was utterly impossible in the Infantry. 4.5 was good in the grunts but considered a slap at those pog units. I dated some WMs though and ended up marrying one. The WMs liked me. I was a non-conformist bad boy grunt. You let grunts off their leashes and they are going to run loose and raise hell and try to screw every dog in heat in the entire area. They usually show up to work though, or are brought back. Drunk, hung over, smiling and seeing who can come up with the biggest lies about what they did while they were running loose. I think we just showed back up to see who made the duty log.
More PC garage! That is why they made pull ups ‘optional’ in the PFT score!
Those women are snipers, not grunts. A grunt is more like a construction worker + miner + sherpa. You fell for the typical BS that if you can pull a trigger, you can be a grunt. There is a reason that actual Red Army assault troops were male. Chicks were used in jobs where they could handle the lighter workload, such as sniping.
Despite today’s hit movies, snipers do not do half the physical work of grunts. Grunts envy them and how they get to lay up for days on end in a hide.
Them ain’t women. Them there’s some Russkies!
Awful long hair for a combat Marine! And it looks like a guy!
Why is she allowed to wear her hair that long?
And when WW2 ended the Russians got rid of the women.
Correct me if Im wrong, but Marines are still schlepping 80 to 100 lbs packs, right? + make-up.
Yeah, she may be female, but if she’s a real Marine, I’d be willing to bet that she’ll rip your nuts off in a fair fight.
I doubt that. You watch too many HollyWeird movies.
“Those women are snipers, not grunts.”
Three were pilots, one was Naval Infantry (Marine).
It hasn’t. I was in 10 years ago. And I’ll give her the benefit of actually going to Infantry Officer Training. When I was deployed, they dropped us a boot LT who was a reservist with Artillery. It was a check in the box for him. He was the epidbme of an idiot and a walking clusterf*ck. We called him LT Whisker Biscuits.
Pull triggers? You posted Soviet pilots.
Pilots pull triggers, and kill the enemy.
