In honor of the Rush Limbaugh Show reaching 30 years old today, I would like Freepers to post and collect their memories. Memories of when they first listened to the Rush Limbaugh Show, and why you kept on listening to it.
I'll start...
It was 1993. Bill Clinton was elected and he was on television, and the radio discussing his budget. He was talking about all the great plans that he had to remove man from space, end the "boondoggle" of the "Freedom " space station, and mothball the space shuttles so the money could be used "for the children". He was promoting what a great boom to the American worker that NAFTA and extended relations with China would be. He talked about how he was going to restore ethics to Washington, DC.
Every show and every radio station was gushing with praise for this man. It was sickening. The women looked like they were fawning and near fainting near him. The men was nodding vigorously and everyone was talking in excited tones about how America will lead the world by undoing Reaganism.
There was only one man who had a contrary view. That was Rush Limbaugh.
So while the rest of America praised the new America led by Clinton, and was looking forward to the new trade agreements with NAFTA and China, I was huddled in my living room, listening to Rush on the radio on a dark and stormy West Virginia night. Only Rush gave voice to how I felt.
Do not think that Rush won't see your entries. He slums here on FR. He really does.
PreRush... I was driving through Sacramento and happened to hear him for about an hour BEFORE he broke out nationally. It was easy to tell even then that it was only a matter of time before broke out and went global.
I heard him in 1988 and had successfully called in during 1989.
1988.
Reagan was still the Boss
1990
August 1, 1988. Listening to Mighty 690 out of New Orleans. Was an oldies station. Went to a talk format and Rush debuted. Loved hearing him from the first moment I heard him.
First heard RL when he took up the cause when the LIBS were calling GHW Bush a wimp.
Was on in DC from 1-3 with 1st hr on at 3. WMAL AM 630
Think the entire show was either done at night or maybe on weekend.
WMAL had a VERY popular news program on at noon took a bit before they started running him ‘live’ 12-3PM
I remember August 1, 1988, but not for Rush’s first show. It wasn’t until the early 90s, around Bill Clinton time.
I also remember August 1, 1998, that it was the tenth anniversary. Rush started the show by asking if there was anything significant about the date. Since the date was stuck in my mind, I did, but it took awhile for his staff to notice.
Congratulations, Rush. You are truly a great American. And yes, I think we met once way before you became famous.
1992 or 1993 in Houston
She had (then) recently called him upset about the anti-war left and told me he was a great comfort to her.
1990. I heard him on WLS while I was a college student.
1988, I was working on the San Diego river, with an old shipmate, and he said have you heard this guy? He is a hoot!
Early 1988, in Sacramento before he went national. He was discussing media fawning over peace protests like floating candles down a creek or flying kites. Plus he honored the crew of the Enola Gay as peace heroes. Thats when I knew.
When were the early TV shows ? that’s when I first started .
Hard to remember exactly. I know 1990 for sure maybe 1989.
Wow..... Same sign-up day....
Driving on the highway back in 1988. For a week I thought his name was Rush Limbo.
I used to drive my 5 year old to a tutor in themiddle of the day back in the Clinton Monica days. My daughter is now 25 and listens to Rush every time she gets a chance. She can really hold her ground against he MD libs.
1990 or 91 when I found it during the lunch hour.
