President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end Robert Mueller's Russia probe immediately, escalating his attacks on the inquiry.
"Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now," the president wrote in a post on Twitter. "Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!"
Trump tweet
Trump's tweet came before the trial of ex-campaign chief Paul Manafort entered its second day in federal court in Virginia. Manafort is being tried by Mueller's team.
Sessions, who endorsed Trump's presidential bid during the 2016 campaign, recused himself from the Russia investigation last March, before Mueller was appointed. The investigation is being overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has defended Mueller against critics in Congress.
Trump has attacked Sessions several times for his recusal. In June, the president wrote in a post on Twitter that Mueller was continuing to investigate "all because Jeff Sessions didn't tell me he was going to recuse himself."
"I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined...and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion," Trump tweeted.
The office of the special counsel did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment Wednesday, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request to elaborate on the president's remarks.
The Department of Justice declined to comment.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called the president's tweet "just another attempt to make the American people look at his latest shiny object."
In a post on Twitter Wednesday, Schumer quoted the president's tweet and wrote: "The Mueller-Rosenstein investigation is making progress at record speed: 35 indictments, 5 guilty pleas & Trump's campaign chairman on trial."
California congressman Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called the president's tweet "an attempt to obstruct justice hiding in plain sight."

The special counsel is investigating the president's tweets criticizing Sessions as part of a wider inquiry into whether the president has obstructed justice, The New York Times reported last month.
Trump's attacks on the special counsel have escalated in recent weeks. Trump's attorney, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, made headlines on Monday saying that "collusion is not a crime."
The president doubled down on his attorney's comments, tweeting on Tuesday that "Collusion is not a crime, but that doesn't matter because there was No Collusion (except by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats)!"
It's true that "collusion" is not a word that appears in any criminal statute that Mueller is examining. Mueller, however, has pursued charges involving conspiracy, obstruction of justice and making false statements.
This Witch Hunt should have been stopped the day we found out that Crooked Hillary and the DNC paid for the “dossier” used for the FISA application, and that it was sourced from British and Russian hacks.
Mueller had to knew this within a week of his appointment.
This operation is designed to protect Hussein Obama from being prosecuted for meddling in the 2016 election. Weaponizing the CIA, FBI, DOJ, and State Department to cripple political opponents. Hussein and his crooked associates should be under federal indictment.
They may be already.................
Perhaps you are right in a technical view. However, this is not a single trial of someone.
Mueller and his minions are wrecking the lives of all they can access who are peripheral to President Trump. It makes others fearful, it scares targets into deflecting, it rewards lies to let these targets escape and create charges against the President. Even false charges or silly claims can lead to charges, indictments etc which can lead to impeachment attempts forever non-stop.
The Mueller team will say, let a jury sort it out or let the congress sort it out, “we did out job by ferreting out sworn allegations or conflicts in testimony for a jury to look at. The bigger the mess a special prosecutor makes the more he is loved by the side opposing the target.
Mueller is already differing espionage to other prosecutors — his goal is take-down his target, DOJ scum for life.
Rumored to be September, well timed for the mid-terms.
“Im not a Trump lackey, but Im with him on this.”
So you’re one of the few semi-rational DemoRATs? Because the term lackey is reserved for DemoRATs!
Sounds good....................
Sessions, IMHO, has acted highly unethically.
He took the job as AG, but then immediately recused himself, on the flimsiest of pretexts. I believe he knew he would do this, and is doing so for political reasons. He lied to his boss about his willingness, and fitness, to do his job.
The DOJ did nothing after the IG's first release. There's no reason to think that Rosenstein will do something after the next release, which will probably be next Spring.
I think this is a bad idea coming out and directly saying this.
President Trump, don’t tweet this, declassify the fisa warrant so the public can see how phony this is.
Pic no worky..................
THIS is just a shiny object to get everybody’s [read MSM] attention focused on the proper subject.
“... declassify the fisa warrant so the public can see how phony this is.”
THAT is the next step!..........................
What about “the fruit of the poisonous tree?” Has not the dossier been discredited and if that was the basis for the whole investigation, why shouldn’t it be squashed. /rhetorical
The democrat party is pushing the historical method of tyrants... The Roman Emperors used the maiestas (treason) trials to deal with their enemies.
If my AG recused himself I would have fired him immediately...
This whole thing is show and, I believe, has been from day one. And I’m Talking about trump. When someone does something that makes no logical sense (allowing Sessions to stay) it means either they are an idiot or they are doing it for reasons and based on information you are not aware of.
Mueller’s job is to verify the allegations in the dossier. It has been his roadmap from Day One.
Thanks. Interesting that a gif that displays fine for me doesn’t show up for others.

Explaining that to a liberal is a fool’s errand............
