A plastic gun with no metal parts is a plastic pipe bomb shaped like a gun.

Except that many of the gun plans call for 3D METAL milling machines.

I disagree with the NRA here.
If you can make them it should be fine no matter how detectable they might be.
I do wonder just how useful a plastic gun would be. Some parts need to be made of steel.

There is no firearm that is 100% plastic.
Springs, firing pins. Barrels. Casings. Plenty of metal to detect. Reinforcement metal on stress point areas.

Hand guns undetectable by X-ray are a myth.
Bananas are detectable by x-ray.
Any plastic capable of firing more than one round without exploding would be easily detected by X-ray.
The modern color X-ray used in airports are not going to be fooled by a plastic gun.
If one was missed it would be the fault of the human being and not the machine or the plastic gun being undetectable.

As far as I can see, the real issue is not one of detection. The real issue is that anyone can now manufacture a gun for their own use. No registration, no background check. You want a gun? Make yourself a gun.
Second Amendment is in force and the right to keep and bear arms is a heck of a lot harder to infringe. Heads are exploding.

In 1988 - a lump of metal might have been the standard for being “detectable.” But that was 30 years ago - seems a new standard might be in order?
Still need gunpowder to make it all work - how detectable is that these days?
Of course - using gunpowder - most of you guys will set of alarms everywhere you go!

This issue is a Trojan Horse for anyone who thinks it’s just about “printed” guns.
It’s about government giving itself the power to make a machine specification file illegal to share because it could be used to make a gun or gun part. If this is allowed to stand, all the technical information on paper or in digital form which could be useful for fabricating or repairing a firearm can be embargoed. Everything from gunsmithing books to CAD files used by gun manufacturers, the gun grabbers will go after it all.
The line has to be drawn before bad precedents are set.

While it wasn’t a 3d printed gun, anyone remember the plastic gun made the character in Clint Eastwood’s “Line of Fire”, now that was clever and lethal.
