Always get a permit before beginning any construction project. Its for safety reasons.
We have to follow the rules in this country, and we don’t, we pay the price.
Improving one’s home is commendable but procedures have to be followed.

Government run amuck. One can’t help but wonder if they aren’t breaking some law by having that lady in the house without handicap access.
Sorry, you were wrong to build it without a permit. They would have helped you with design/compliance and you could still build it yourself.
Let me guess. The officials who did this are compassionate democRATS, right? Any other municipality would demand the Permit fee, or tear down the ramp. Did there happen to be a Trump 2016 sign still in the front yard? That whole area is solid “yellow dog democRAT”.
We “The Government) can not have people think that they own property just because the paid for it.

We need a lot of Regulatory Decapture / Release.
The shake down that is permits and licenses needs to be curtailed and rolled back.
The county should have worked with them to get permitting. Liberals just don’t get the idea of government.
If the son was in the biz, he should have known what was required. I know it is tricky to make an exception for this elderly couple and not that one.
Hopefully the son will get their permit in order and then reconstruct his original work.
And believe me, I hate that all this sort of stuff is regulated and that corrupt municipal officials bend the rules for their friends while coming down hard on others all the time, etc.
Many years ago, I called the city to ask if I needed a permit to build a fence. They said yes and gave me the requirements, height/placement/location, etc.
I asked if I really needed to place my permit in the front window. I was told ABSOLUTELY, otherwise we will get calls from ALL your neighbors.
The letter from the “manager” was insulting. He wrote “it’s a shame that you felt discouraged to the point of removing the ramp”. Having his 90+ year old parents threatened with fines and imprisonment is not the same as “feeling discouraged”. That manager is a total jerkoff.
a while back I was captured remodeling without a permit. i took their notice and went downtown and pled ignorance. they asked for the permit fee and after I paid it, that was that. I asked them to come down and inspect before I covered up the electrical wiring with sheetrock, and they said ‘go ahead, no problem’. once I deferred to them, they because nice.
The son is in the “construction trade” and din’t know he needed a permit?
