If a liberal like Jesse Jackson went on CNN and accused my father of being a "known womanizer" like President Trump, conservatives across America would go off the rails.
They'd defend the reputation of Ronald Reagan to the max and blast Jackson for his false and evil equivalency.
They'd point out that it is totally outrageous to compare the personal lives of President Trump and my father.
Yet look what happened last week when a prominent conservative evangelical pastor from Dallas went on Fox News and called my father a "known womanizer."
The Rev. Robert Jeffress, who's a Fox contributor, was asked by Ed Henry to respond to another minister who had accused Republican lawmakers of selling their good Christian souls by supporting a serial bed-hopper like Trump.
"You know," Jeffress responded, "this is not an unusual thing - we've been here before. Back in 1980, evangelicals chose to support a twice-married Hollywood actor who was a known womanizer in Hollywood. His name was Ronald Reagan. ...
"The reason we supported President Reagan was not because we were supporting womanizing or divorce. We supported his policies."
When I heard Jeffress say that I blew my top and started angrily tweeting.
The first tweet I fired off to the Southern Baptist minister was pretty blunt - "All I can say is go F yourself."
My second tweet was "Dr. Jeffress. How dare you compare my father to Trump."
Apparently, I was the only conservative Reagan Republican in North America who actually cared that Pastor Jeffress was casually throwing my father under the bus to support his beloved sinner-in-chief.
All I heard from my fellow conservatives in the twittersphere was crickets -and a week later I still do.
What that holy man from Dallas said was absolutely outrageous.
He equated my father - who was divorced from my mother Jane Wyman when he was dating in Hollywood and not yet married to Nancy - to Donald Trump, who was dating Playboy playmates and who knows who else when he was married.
What was more outrageous, however, was that no conservative Republicans or Fox commentators rose up in defense of my father and his reputation.
As I also pointed out in a tweet last week, all those conservative talk show hosts and politicians who keep saying how much they love Ronald Reagan are either lying or have lost their spines and a pair of other things.
I don't believe those so-called "Reagan conservatives" anymore.
If they wouldn't stand up and defend my father against a vile and uninformed statement from someone like Jeffress', there's no reason to assume they love my father at all.
I don't care what the president of the United States does in his personal life. I care what he does as president of the United States.
If you want to defend Trump, fine.
But for God's sake, why would you use my father to make excuses for a president who has cheated on every woman he's been married to?
To rephrase that famous old line, Rev. Jeffress, "I knew Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine. And Donald Trump ain't no Ronald Reagan - and vice versa."
Message to Michael Reagan: Lighten up, Francis.
Perhaps no one was watching?
First I’ve heard of it.
Also 38 yrs ago is a long time...finding anyone in rino congress to defend would be hard.
Ronald Reagan was a great man not known to be a womanizer.
I have not heard about this demented Baptist minister until now. I dont use Twitter, so there is nothing I would broadcast outside of here on Free Republic or with my friends.
Michael, Im with you on your defense of your incredible father, but the lack of comments may just mean the people didnt hear this wacko say anything.
They were both democrats once too. Go ballistic Michael.
Michael, you’re proof certain that a good father can’t always be blamed for his idiot child/ren.
President Trump is the only recent President who could hold a candle to President Reagan. Comparing the two is not a bad thing... and I doubt that Pastor Jeffress meant any disrespect. The two were men from different times. At the time President Reagan got a divorce it was considered at least as shameful as what people consider men who have had affairs these days.
Yeah I missed it too.
Thank you Michael for spreading this trash far and wide. /s
I had not heard of this, and likely never would have, if not for you.
Wouldn’t it have been far better for you to post a glowing description of your father focusing on his fidelity, and taking a pass on pointing to an instance of some blithering idiot saying he had been involved in infidelity?
Michael, sometimes you have terrible judgement.
“Michael, youre proof certain that a good father cant always be blamed for his idiot child/ren.”
And the truth of the matter is that Michael is a Reagan by adoption. He is not Ronald Reagan’s blood. That said, he did turn out a lot better than the children that Reagan had with Nancy, all of whom are worthless liberal crap. Michael is so yesterday, I am surprised someone like Jeffress was able to step on his tail.
Gotta admit two things re my knee-jerk comment above:
1) It sounded to me like the object was more about denigrating Trump rather than defending RR;
2) While having never heard of this Jeffress character, I have a genetic aversion to ‘preachers’.
Mikey, GFY.
Michael, President Trump is doing great and is what the country needs now.
You should have said, “My father was always respectful of women and in regards to President Trump, I understand and am persuaded to believe he is doing great things for the people of this country”.
Your actual statement shows you still have an anti-Trump perspective. You really should adapt to the changing times. You would be more relevant in doing so.
Gee Michael, hate Trump much?
NO...Michael is right!! Rev. Jefress needs to apologize!! Reagan was NO womanizer! A womanizer is a man who cheats on his wife!
“Rev. Jefress needs to apologize!!”
+1
Plenty of good men are known “womanizers”.. and plenty of manipulative women are all to eager to play along with their game.
Michael is a Hysterical, Rude Never-Trumper. He is disgusting for cursing out Pastor Jeffrees like that. His father would be ashamed of him.
Apparently there are 3 books out...all supposedly not completely accurately chronicling Reagan’s many affairs. First wife was supposedly divorcing her husband when Reagan was fooling with her....Jeffres may be correct. I understand Michaels anger but the truth is the truth. Of note, Reagan did that before serving in public office.
Huh??? What is a “genetic aversion” to all preachers???
Jeffres was a Trump supporter from day one when many other “preachers” were ambivalent, and he campaigned among evangelicals...large voting block for Trump...Never heard of him? Well, he was often on Hannity’s radio and TV show and appeared at some rallies too.
Michael Reagan was a NeverTrumper from day one...
If Reagan were actually a womanizer, it would have been all over the news media. That being said, young Reagan needs to cut us some slack. If we had the media resources of the left, we would have been more able to erupt over this. Lacking their huge media presence, we can’t throw a fit over every piece of nonsense.
