The Trump administration suffered another legal defeat on its sanctuary city crackdown after a judge Friday permanently blocked the government from retaliating against Chicago’s sanctuary policy by stripping away its police grant money.
U.S. District Judge Harry D. Leinenweber, a Reagan appointee to the bench, said the administration is free to track down illegal immigrants on its own, but it cannot force Chicago to cooperate in reporting or turning them over.
His ruling follows similar defeats for the Trump administration in California and Philadelphia, where judges have also ruled against the administration’s attempts to condition Byrne Justice Assistance Grant money on better cooperation on immigration.

Judge-clowns are not the US Congress, and do not have the power of the purse.

Yep, this turkey Leinenweber tried to make it a nationwide ruling but was shot down, this only applies to Chicago for now.
This will be great news because it can be presented as another reason to confirm Kavanaugh, it can be another Wile E Coyote Golden Anvil Award if it is rocket docketed and solved before the election, it can be used to point out how sanctuary cities = high crime and 80% already don’t want them now. In the end USSC backs Trump anyway
They probably think "gift" means "mandate" and "donation" means "requirement."
Speaking of donation, California tried to call state income taxes as donations to get around the loss of state income tax deductions, but it was rejected.

You are right with saying no law can compel helping the federal government, but you are completely wrong to say this applies to this situation.
There is nothing saying federal grants have to go anywhere that disagrees with the federal government.

Perfect way to stop this. Every time a judge rules in favor of “illegal aliens rights” , rent a property close to their home and stock it with illegal alien criminals.
Unfortunately the qualification for federal grants are written in the enabling legislation and cannot be altered without amending the legislation. Unless the grants were specifically tied to following immigration law the judge here is correct.
As a teacher I was in a school thal lost its Title 1 funding because we had not followed the prescribed stsff usage guidelines from DoE.
But it doesn’t have to tie to immigration law, if the law allowed discretion.

America can never be great again until we get rid of 95% of our so called “judges”. They’re all out of control. They all think they are gods. If “judges” were what they are supposed to be, Kavanaugh would be no big deal to the Socialist “Democrats”. Unfortunately, they aren’t.
Whether the law allows discretion is something I believe the judge would have considered. He is a Reagan appointee from 30 years ago. I trust him to know and apply the law. Where local jurisdictions are NOT protected is when they interfere or obstruct federal agents from doing their jobs. This has occurred and this is what Trump must pursue.

hope the judge has a short time left as a judge and never pursues any similar sort of authoritative position - he clearly does not understand his job as judge and thinks he can do as he pleases = control freak.
We need an orginalist Congress willing to impeach and remove these black-robe fascists who illegally write law. Writing law is the Constitutional purview of the legislature only.
This judge needs to stand before congress and answer for his perfidy and sedition.
