As trade tensions escalate between Washington and Beijing, the U.S. Senate quietly passed legislation on Thursday that would lower trade barriers on hundreds of items made in China.
With no debate, Senate unanimously passed a bill that would cut or eliminate tariffs on toasters, chemicals and roughly 1,660 other items made outside United States.
Nearly half of those items are produced in China, according to a Reuters analysis of government records.
The United States and China, the world's two largest economies, are increasingly at loggerheads over trade.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a series of punitive tariffs on Chinese imports in a bid to halt a Chinese surge in high-technology industries that threatens to displace U.S. dominance. China has retaliated with its own duties on imports from the United States.
The White House has not publicly taken a position on the so-called miscellaneous tariff bill, which has now passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives unanimously. The two chambers need to resolve minor differences before they can send the legislation to Trump to sign into law.
Supporters of the bill have said it would boost the economy by getting rid of tariffs set up to protect industries that no longer exist in the United States. The National Association of Manufacturers has said U.S. businesses pay $1 million a day on such import duties.
"It makes no sense because it is a direct and punishing tax on making things in America and for creating jobs in America," the trade group's president, Jay Timmons, said in a prepared statement celebrating the bill's passage.
Among the beneficiaries are companies that have moved production offshore. Hamilton Beach Brands Holding Co, for example, would pay reduced tariffs on Chinese-made toaster ovens, steam irons and other household appliances it used to make domestically.

President Trump can and should veto this and we the people must vote out the RINOs, every last one.
So well put. Few people have their eyes open.
Those thoughts go through my mind, and Im sure the mind of many other people.
What a wasted opportunity...
I believe Trump is right in this regard: Unilateral reduction of tarrifs is nothing other than “feel good” legislation. A bunch of congress critters get to pat themeselves on the back, telling themselves they are “promoting free trade”. They are not promoting free trade.
One sided actions do not promot free trade, and lowering our tarrif barriers, all by ourselves, does not induce any other nation to unilaterally do the same. Why? Our unulateral action gives them no incentive to lower any of their tarrifs.
Trump finally used the word I have been repoeating in WSJ and here for years, when it comes to what we need in trade - reciprocity. We need nation-by-nation agreements that are reciprocal, of reciprocal benefits to each.
Our stupid congress critters just said “our shores are open, whether yours are or not”.
Trump should veto the bill.
Another example why I am willing to contribute to President Trump’s campaign, but NOT to the GOP. The “Never Trumpers” have gone underground, but still control the GOP.
Having the Democrats, the Media, and the RINOs doing this stuff while Trump is navigating these waters is like trying to negotiate a price for a house, and your spouse is in the third seat (while negotiations are going on) saying “Honey...I REALLY want this house. I LIKE this house. Can’t we just buy it?”
The seller is just going to bide their time, because they know you are going to lose because your bargaining power and position is weak with your spouse there.
Chinese Jade merchants would often initially reveal a piece they were selling to a customer and study their pupils as the customer saw the piece for the first time. Dilatation of the pupils of the eye is an involuntary response to seeing something desirable. If they saw your pupils dilate, they knew you liked the piece, and that gave them valuable information when bargaining.
Here, they just read the news accounts and get the same information.
If we have true free trade without subsidies and tariffs no one gets to control the “tit for tat” and therefore no one gets any kickbacks or favors. Plain and simple!!!
Paying off their lobbyist handlers.
Of course the United States Congress is trying to undercut the President. They are completely anti-American and all they care about is their globalist masters. Look how quickly they’re able to pass bills like this with almost no one even mentioning it on t.v. Veto this crap (if they ever reconcile it) and make sure you tweet about this daily. Are these fools working for China?!?! The Democrats hate Trump so much they are now AGAINST taxing the Chinese. Let’s be clear. No one did anything until Trump came along and now suddenly everyone is an expert. They have no clue!

These stupid traitors don’t want to listen to US. They each have a lobbyist in their pocket. These lying RINO’s had better beware of demoralizing us right before the mid-terms.
He should. If it passed unanimously, it would certainly be overridden in the Senate.
Don’t know what the House vote was, but I did not see this bill come out of the House.
And once there are few if any domestic producers of a product in the US, the price of those imported products tends to be raised. In the past, there have been articles about vitamin C and other supplements made mostly in China and how the prices have been jacked up.
Well said.
The globalist cabal in Washington has become fabulously wealthy trading out jobs in the USA to the Chinese.
Sit down and make a clear statement before the cameras Mr President telling the Congressman and Senators how disappointed you are that they would try to sneak this through without floor debate. Make the soon-to-be campaigning reps own this bit of treachery.
Force them to pass it over your veto with the light shining brightly upon them.
And if I'm not mistaken, the House has gone into a one month recess so the bill may indeed die in their absence?
Wait a minute. This bill - which would destroy more American jobs - passed both the Senate and House unanimously. Unanimously!
How can it be that not one single person - from Bernie Sanders to Rand Paul - voted against it. This is very, very strange.
Yay Uniparty!
Trump should tell Congress:
“You better fully fund and authorize the wall if you think I’m going to sign this.”
Report: Chinese Are Awed by Trumps Skill as a Strategist and Tactician

Top officials and intellectuals in China are awed by President Donald Trumps skill as a strategist and tactician, according to co-founder and director of the European Council on Foreign Relations Mark Leonard.
Writing in the Financial Times, Leonard reports that on a recent trip to China many of those he spoke to said that Mr Trump is the US first president for more than 40 years to bash China on three fronts simultaneously: trade, military and ideology.
And the stupids in the Congress move to undercut "Donald the Strong" (nickname in China for our beloved President)
And Donald the Strong just got an agreement with Europe to join together to resist China on trade and tariff issues.
AND FOR THOSE THAT MISSED IT:
Larry Kudlow: E.U. now backs Trump's trade fight with China The Washington Times ^ | Thursday, July 26, 2018 | S.A. Miller

President Trumps chief economic adviser said Thursday that European Union Commission President Jean Claude Juncker pledged to back the U.S. trade fight against China.
The commitment to take on Chinas trade abuses was made as part of the breakthrough zero-tariff deal struck this week by Mr. Trump and Mr. Juncker, said Larry Kudlow, director of the presidents National Economic Council.
Game Set and Match to Donald the Strong.
I just fired off emails to Senators Cruz and Cornyn asking them why they didn’t vote against this Senate bill.
Bunch of traitors.
