The New Orleans Police Department is investigating whether two of its own former police officers should be charged with a hate crime in connection to accusations they severely beat a man outside a bar earlier this week, the police chief said Thursday.
The early Tuesday beating outside the Mid-City Yacht Club has already resulted in the arrest and firing of John Galmon, 26, and Spencer Sutton, 24, who were off duty at the time of the fight. The former officers pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of simple battery, but NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison reiterated Thursday (July 26) the investigation, "could very well lead to further charges," pending further investigation.
Jorge Gomez, who turned 39 Thursday, came forward to local media as the victim in the beating and said that prior to the physical fight, officers questioned his military service and one of them called him a "fake American." Gomez told The New Orleans Advocate he was born in the United States, and raised in Honduras before returning to New Orleans. He was hospitalized that morning and later released. A relative said he returned to the hospital Tuesday evening because of extreme pain.
Asked by a WVUE Fox 8 reporter Thursday morning if NOPD is investigating the beating "as a possible hate crime," Harrison responded, "Well, we are."

I hate the term “Hate Crime”. Hate it. It should be expunged from our vocabulary.
They gave the guy a beating. I’m pretty sure love had nothing to do with it. Did they hate they guy? Who cares? What difference does it make.
A beating is a beating. Prosecute on that basis.
Not a surprise that NOPD would have such officers, but the officers may be surprised when they become guests at Angola.
So you have already convicted them? I’m waiting like I always do.
“So you have already convicted them? Im waiting like I always do.”
Like the awful case in Natchitoches, convictions will be the responsibilities of juries.
Should have known. That awful case just took a turn.
I figured the mother was involved in the Natchitoches baby murder.
I could not agree more hate crime is a thought crime. A crime is a crime. Adding more severity to a crime because of what someone is thinking is an offensive notion. Yet it is another issue the left has won. “Hate crimes” are pervasive and try getting rid of it, good luck with that.
You thought right. I knew there would be more and I did not jump on the band wagon that it was a “hate whitey crime”.
“Hate crime” is just another weapon for democrats to use and for the federal government to stick it’s nose in.
Hate Crimes laws were invented with the goal of putting more white people in prison to appease black hucksters like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, who bemoaned racial disparities in prisons.
The prison guard union approved and got behind the passage of these news set of laws, because it meant more money for them.
Hate Crimes laws were never intended to be applied to nonwhites.
Hate Crimes laws are a direct attack on white people, who simply do not commit enough crime.
