The rise and fall of the Art Institute of Charleston took just 11 years, carrying with it the aspirations of hundreds of young artists and leaving some of them struggling beneath a mountain of debt.
The for-profit chain of colleges opened its Market Street location in April 2007 amid fanfare from local political leaders, including then-Mayor Joe Riley, who had invited the school to train workers for the hospitality and restaurant industries.

Go to art school to work in a restaurant? What the heck?
Marionettes weightened with $90,000 debt.
If you can’t self finance, don’t go to school for an art that leaves unable to pay the bills.
Acting school students often go the same route.

It is like when Alex first introduced himself in the TV show Taxi.
President Trump should immediately cancel Federal Student Loan programs. He should cancel all federal subsidies, grants and any and all federal assistance to all colleges and universities.
And most especially Art Institutes.
If these scammers and grifters can’t stand on their own without taxpayer money, then screw them.
Let them fail.
The Art Institute in SF is a huge landowner. My niece was looking to go there on a softball scholarship, of all things.
Tuition is ridiculous, as was the scholarship offer. They own a bunch of property in SF. Surprised they are still there and haven’t sold out.
Those schools are selling dreams to people who would rather dream than work.

You don’t need to go to school to learn art. Did Van Gogh have to go to Art School?
You either got it or you don’t.

I remember Mom and Dad always said persue your dreams but make sure you find a profession where you can work to pay your bills.
Actually they did not have to say it. We learned it by watching them.....I dont think that happens as often today.
Perhaps they meant Culinary Arts? Otherwise this story makes no sense.
I used to work in a restaurant with a lot of students from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.
And yes, pretty much all of them played for the other team.
