The rise and fall of the Art Institute of Charleston took just 11 years, carrying with it the aspirations of hundreds of young artists — and leaving some of them struggling beneath a mountain of debt.

The for-profit chain of colleges opened its Market Street location in April 2007 amid fanfare from local political leaders, including then-Mayor Joe Riley, who had invited the school to train workers for the hospitality and restaurant industries.

Students graduated with a median of $29,700 in federal debt — not including private loans — and only 27 percent had paid a single dollar toward that debt three years after leaving the school.

“I mean, kids were coming out with $90,000 worth of debt. In an industry that’s paying $15 for line cooks, that’s really hard to manage,” Bakst said.

then-Mayor Joe Riley, who had invited the school to train workers for the hospitality and restaurant industries.

THIS is the #1 reason for the massive student debt burden and the plethora of fly-by-night schools. These industries need to TRAIN THEIR OWN DAMNED EMPLOYEES!!

A lot of other industries need to join them.

If you can’t self finance, don’t go to school for an art that leaves unable to pay the bills.

Acting school students often go the same route.

Every waiter, waitress, stripper/hooker in L.A. is an undiscovered actor/actress/actron.

Every one.

It is like when Alex first introduced himself in the TV show Taxi.

President Trump should immediately cancel Federal Student Loan programs. He should cancel all federal subsidies, grants and any and all federal assistance to all colleges and universities.

And most especially Art Institutes.

If these scammers and grifters can’t stand on their own without taxpayer money, then screw them.

Let them fail.

The Art Institute in SF is a huge landowner. My niece was looking to go there on a softball scholarship, of all things.

Tuition is ridiculous, as was the scholarship offer. They own a bunch of property in SF. Surprised they are still there and haven’t sold out.

Those schools are selling dreams to people who would rather dream than work.

You don’t need to go to school to learn art. Did Van Gogh have to go to Art School?

You either got it or you don’t.

Gee Good Parenting 101

I remember Mom and Dad always said persue your dreams but make sure you find a profession where you can work to pay your bills.

Actually they did not have to say it. We learned it by watching them.....I dont think that happens as often today.

Perhaps they meant Culinary Arts? Otherwise this story makes no sense.

I used to work in a restaurant with a lot of students from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

And yes, pretty much all of them played for the other team.

>>Taxi was good TV.<<

MeTV had it for a while. They have The Odd Couple and it is still funny 3 decades later.

Cheers was funny until Rebecca showed up.

Some humor stands the test of time (I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett as stand out examples).

Most does not.
