As Americans fought in recent weeks over whether restaurants should refuse to serve top aides to President Trump, an entire city has been debating what it means to host his convention for reelection.
Charlotte won the rights to the 2020 Republican National Convention on Friday. But that's largely because it faced little serious competition. And even before the victory was announced in Austin, Texas, this thriving, progressive urban island in the Trump-friendly South was suffering some buyer's remorse.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, a Democrat, says the decision to host the convention was the hardest she has tackled "not just as a mayor but as a mom and as a friend" to her community.
To quell anger from her constituents, she has vowed that she will not deliver a welcome speech, an extraordinary break from custom. Other local leaders are going further, promising to use the occasion to speak out against Trump.
"If it were Mitt Romney or damn near anybody besides Donald Trump," the debate would have been "much less heated," said Larken Egleston, a Democratic council member.

So will Charlotte Democrat Mayor Vi Lyles refuse millions in tax dollars that will come in due to the convention?
She is all for Republicans who don’t fight back and are good losers...

“If it were Mitt Romney or damn near anybody besides Donald Trump,” the debate would have been “much less heated,” said Larken Egleston, a Democratic council member.
What losers
Basically if it was a typical republican that lets democrats sh1t all over them and asks for more, they would be fine.
None of these guys ever explains in detail what is so damn horrible about Trump. They all loved him before they hated him. He ran in their circles. They smiled andmtook photos with him. Took his money.
Las Vegas would have been better.
He’s going to win reelection.
Everyone who rejected him will be - again - chagrined at their bad choices.
I still remember the depression that came over my city - NYC - when Reagan was reelected.
I laughed.
So it was ok for Charlotte to host the Democrat convention with Obama, but not ok to have the GOP and Trump.
Charlotte is a ‘Rat ****hole.
I’m just South of Charlotte and can verify the mayor is a piece of work. Pretty sure sure is a dyke hiding in the closet.
Should have gone to a smaller city, but then there is the problem of number of hotel rooms.
Indeed so. A fat, illiterate Angry Black Woman who is the queen of grievance mongering. There are dozens of other cities that would have been better or more welcoming.
Correction. I thought Jennifer Roberts was still mayor. Sorry for the confusion.
This is a very awkward article.
Cities have to place bids for political conventions. It’s not like political parties just show up unannounced. Charlotte solicited this convention. Now that their bid was successful, they wish they weren’t getting the convention?
Does this make sense to anyone? Am I missing something?
The age of Democrat thugs.
Not only did they host the democrat convention, but the Democrats didn’t pay the 10 million it cost to put on convention. Duke Energy put up the money. I guess in the long run the citizens of NC paid for it. What a bunch of deadbeats.
That's an excellent point. Las Vegas in the summer always has plenty of rooms available, and plenty of first class venues to hold a convention. And Las Vegas has a professionalism and mastery of the hospitality industry that puts Charlotte to shame in every respect.
The one oasis in Charlotte is the Billy Graham Library center. Other than that, you can flush the whole town.
Pick another city. This beeyotch does not deserve the revenue a convention would bring.
We should ask Kasich who skipped the GOP convention the year he made a fool of himself up on the podium with Trump.
Evidently several on the Charlotte City Council were heartily cheering for this decision,......see http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3672596/posts
(I posted the latter thread after searching and not finding another article about this news....my bad.)
