President Trump’s longtime lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, secretly recorded a conversation with Mr. Trump two months before the presidential election in which they discussed payments to a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump, according to lawyers and others familiar with the recording.
The F.B.I. seized the recording this year during a raid on Mr. Cohen’s office. The Justice Department is investigating Mr. Cohen’s involvement in paying women to tamp down embarrassing news stories about Mr. Trump ahead of the 2016 election. Prosecutors want to know whether that violated federal campaign finance laws, and any conversation with Mr. Trump about those payments would be of keen interest to them.

We really need to end qualified immunity for public officials. People should be able to sue their socks of for this type of unethical behavior.

Many states made it illegal to protect corrupt politicians, and more made it illegal after Linda Tripp taped Monica. The media said the taping was the most horrible thing. I despise the leftists and their fake media.
Why in the world would they even record that conversation? That’s a stupid thing to record. I can see recording things that are conversations with others you feel may not keep their word or may be lying or scamming, but recording this discussion? It seems odd.
Now as the article notes, Trump never paid this woman. The National Enquirer did. The claim is that Trump didn’t know. However, there is the Stormy Daniels payment which they admitted to. I wonder if there is a tape of that. Since there is audio of this, could there be of that? Also, will evidence be uncovered which shows he knew that Pecker from the National Enquirer was paying her off?
Here’s the bottom line - no one is shocked or really cares if Trump had an affair years ago. We knew he’d had affairs and hate dated a lot. That’s why it’s better just to admit to it. The truth comes to the surface in the end. If you admit immediately, you deal with the fallout immediately. If you aren’t honest and the truth comes out and then you admit, then you have to deal with the fallout of two things later and more bad press.
People say this was because he was running for President? That’s logical, but my thoughts are it probably would have been a payoff regardless. Even if he’s not President, I can see him not wanting that out there - particularly Stormy. He had an international real estate business, a TV show, and a wife and underage son as well as 4 adult children (including 2 daughters). That’s reason enough to preserve a reputation. I’m sure there are plenty of wealthy men who aren’t President who do these NDAs.
As far as Cohen, it was obvious he was going to flip. He’s been criticizing Trump and making comments which would lend one to think that.
That a dumb thing to record as they didn’t even pay her. It would make sense to record certain conversations to hold people accountable or for legal protection, but there is ZERO logic in recording this.

True, but the problem you note is not being in the position before and he must learn who is good, the hard way. He loved Tillerson and Cohn, but they were not of the same timber as Pompeo. Accomplished people who are real believers is a tough combination to find. So you have to constantly flush people who do not believe and are leaking to destroy you or get rich.
I think he could have done much better than Wray. I am not sure they are cleaning the FBI Augean Stables like they should, and he should have been fired after Lakeland as well. 17 kids died on his watch as they were derelict in their duty.
