Psst. Hey buddy, wanna buy a straw?
After fishing the gulf coast of
Texas for a few years, most of
what was seen were water bottles,
baby diapers, and wads of
30 lb. test. I don’t recall seeing
any straws. The trash barrels
placed at various favorite fishing
spots, we’re always overflowing to
the point that it looked like a
mountain of trash. And one learned
very quickly not to use the port-o-potty’s
on a Texas humid, over 100 Deg day.
I have read that paper straws take more resources to make than used in the making of plastic straws, along with the normal pollution effects of making paper.
Wasn't that the whole reason we had the "stop using paper, use plastic/foam" argument years ago in the first place?
The straws are not the problem. The problem is that the straws get into the waterways.

Probably——these Save the Earth people make my head spin.
Their new buzzword is “sustainabilty”.

They are ridiculously cheap at Amazon—but them before the virtue signaling starts!
The world turned without antibiotics, the internal combustion engine, the light bulb, and the internet, too.
Doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to get rid of those things, either.
From the Stossel video, the 500 million figure comes from a 10 year-old boy, Milo Cress, who did a telephone study for his school project. The actual figure may be 175 million. When you figure that the U.S. contribution to ocean plastic pollution is only 1%. Of that, plastic straws are a minuscule amount, hardly worth the cost of alternatives to plastic straws.
As for me, I love my soda (and sometimes beer) over ice. I use the same plastic straw. No sea turtle is going to get that straw!
... and the heroin syringes are made out of PLASTIC!!!
I got mine on Amazon:

It turns out that I ordered 250 of them. I rarely use a straw at home, but I bought these for the pure principle of the matter.
Black Market straws — who knew?? LOL!!
