Ending program immediately for purchases directly from manufacturer is unfair, customers say
Some Tesla customers say they now have to fork over an extra $14,000 for their new Model 3 electric cars because of Ontario's sudden decision to end an incentive program for electric and hydrogen vehicles.
The provincial government announced Wednesday that the program will end on Sept. 10 for those who have their vehicle delivered, registered, and plated if it was purchased from a dealer, but it ended immediately for those who ordered their electric and hydrogen vehicle directly from the manufacturer.
As Tesla does not have dealers and their cars are sold directly to consumers, some Tesla customers say they feel like they've been unfairly targeted.
Matthew Cheung told CBC Toronto that his father had been saving up for an electric vehicle for some time, and once the more modestly priced Tesla Model 3, which retails for $45,600, was announced, he felt owning an electric car was finally in reach.
While still a bit of a financial stretch, Cheung said his father put down a non-refundable deposit for his "dream car" the day before the election.
Cheung said he knew the rebate would be cancelled but expected it to be done in a way where existing orders in progress would be honoured....
David Adams, president of the Global Automakers of Canada industry association, said Friday that experience elsewhere shows that sales of electric vehicles take a hit when subsidies are removed, such as when British Columbia stopped and then restarted its program.
"When they cancelled it, sales went down dramatically, and then when they reinstated it, sales went back up again. That is the same pattern that we've seen in other jurisdictions internationally," he said.
How old is dear old dad? If he is still in his 50's/60's then he should be arguing for himself and not using his son as a spokesperson. If he's older then he really should be buying a much more reliable car.
If the son really cared about "dear old dad" then he would have talked him out of an electric car that could leave him stranded in the middle of nowhere in the cold.
To Change the subject pay stubs should reflect all the employers cost as part of GROSS pay.
“All these cars, electric, hybrid, etc., should include on the price sticker the real price and the amount of tax benefits, tax subsidy, etc. “
They have the price before rebates. Are you saying they should change it to after rebates?
Amazing that a subsidized company that has yet to turn profits has a stock price of ~$318/share.
“He cant even find a way to sell even 5,000 now.”
He is selling over 5000 .... a week!
” I just bought a car that gives 44mpg on the highway and has an 18 gallon tank.”
What car is that?
“Amazing that a subsidized company that has yet to turn profits has a stock price of ~$318/share.”
That was with a production of 2000 a week. They are now on the way to 10,000 a week.
Auto sales experts give 3 reasons consumers may want to wait for the Tesla Model 3
Tesla or for that matter most products sold manufacturer direct avoid middleman markups. Im not acquainted with auto dealer markups so cant say much about them.
While working in Ontario for about a year, I had to purchase quite a few industrial items. I respected the companys buy Canadian policy but rebelled in one instance as the price was 50% greater than off the shelf US price plus it was going to take several weeks to get the items. Hardly off the shelf. The manufacturer was setup for international shipping and even had an ecommerce website to use. I had the material in 2-days, duty paid at a radically lower delivered price. I really didnt like getting screwed by the CA distributor that had an exclusive territory for Ontario and Quebec.
I think the gist of this article is that those who ordered from a dealer are being given preferential treatment.from the article:
As Tesla does not have dealers and their cars are sold directly to consumersBTW. My take on why Tesla doesn't have dealers is because dealers won't have Teslas.
Dealers need to make a profit and not even Tesla with their direct sales to consumers is making a profit...And that doesn't even get into what a dealer would have to have to simply service a Tesla. Beginning with trained techs.
Dealers need to make a profit and not even Tesla with their direct sales to consumers is making a profit...
...
Tesla actually has very good margins on car sales. They don’t show a profit because of their considerable investment in increased production capacity.
I’m right with you on that. I fill my Jetta once every two weeks. In that time frame there are 320 miles to work, 60 to church miles and sundry errands. Usually it takes 11 to 11.5 gallons to top off...like clockwork. I’m not cluttering up a station’s pump island as often, and when there not long.
I want some money, too.
He’s upset because his fellow taxpayers are no longer on the hook for his indulgence?! This doesn’t even move the dial on the “sympathy” meter but it definitely pegs the schadenfreude one!
"Subsidy" means "someone else is paying for it"
The per share price isn’t the issue, it is the P/E ratio. Take a look, last time I checked it was thousands to one. Considering their production issues and that these subsidies will run out I wouldn’t touch this stock with a ten ft pole.
All these cars, electric, hybrid, etc.,
My wife’s Prius V and most other hybrids receive NO tax rebates.
Needs to be a plugin to qualify.
I totally enjoy the Prius.
Also among the lowest total cost of operation.
...He cant even find a way to sell even 5,000 now.
He is selling over 5000 .... a week...
I was wrong about going to Singapore. It’s Shanghai.
Here’s what the industry says about 5,000 Teslas per week.
Dave Sullivan, manager of product analysis at the market research firm AutoPacific Inc., wasnt impressed. Reaching it is one thing, Sullivan said. Consistently producing 5,000 per week with outstanding quality is another. I dont think producing 5,000 once is anything to get excited about until its repeatable..”
“My wifes Prius V and most other hybrids receive NO tax rebates.”
If she/you didn’t get a rebate then the manufacture got the incentives for building them.
Take away ALL the government subsidies and nobody is going to buy the glorified golf carts.
The price of virtue signaling has just risen unexpectedly.
It’s a good thing that Canada doesn’t have a 1st Amendment, or some lefty with a bend-over judge would get an injunction against it on ‘free speech’ grounds.
‘Cause signaling is speech, dontyaknow.
