This cartoon depicting the Thai cave rescue is going viral in Thailand — and it has a hidden meaning

Two Thai artists have created a cartoon, full of hidden symbols, to depict the ongoing efforts to rescue the Thai soccer team — and it has gone viral.

~~

It depicts 13 wild boars — representing the stranded soccer team of the same name — swimming out of a narrow underwater cave alongside dozens of other animals, which represent the countries involved in the rescue efforts.

Every animal in the cartoon has a meaning. Courtesy of Sisidea

Here's what each cartoon in the picture symbolizes:

•Wild boars (there are 12 small ones, and one larger one): The stranded boys and their soccer coach

•White elephant: Narongsak Osotthanakorn, the leader of the command center in charge of the rescue mission

•White horse: All the heroes who have been involved in the mission

•White seals: The Thai Navy SEALs who have been leading the rescue efforts

•Frogs: The cave divers who have been helping

•Blue lion: Rescuers from Britain and Belgium

•Kangaroo: Rescuers from Australia

•Panda: Rescuers from China

•Crane: Rescuers from Japan

•Moose: Rescuers from Sweden

•Tiger: Rescuers from Myanmar

•Brown elephant: Rescuers from Laos

•Eagle: Rescuers from the US

•Iron Man mask: Elon Musk, who has been tweeting his support for the rescue effort

•Swallows: Climbers from Thailand

•Dog: K9 unit at the scene

•Dragon: The team drilling into the cave and pumping water out

•Birds facing all the animals at the end of the cave: Journalists covering the rescue mission

•Black crow among the birds: People who are criticizing the mission

Having the elephant go first seems like a risky scheme to me but if he gets thru a gap, anyone else can too.

Here’s to a successful retrieval of the last 5.

Yes. Prayers up in gratitude and for a successful mission in getting the last 5 people out. Also, safety for all the brave rescuers.

It’s my understanding that the cave is fairly popular with amateur cavers. When it dries out again some serious alteration needs to happen such as narrow passages need to be expanded, better drainage for low places, etc. otherwise, it should be sealed.

Well, he did build a giant cigar tube, that they will never use, to extract the boys. The tube diameter is 31cm. I think it arrives in 17 days...

My wife likes to watch, of all things, competetive badminton on TV. I happened to be in the room when one tournament in Thailand was just ending and they were giving awards out, everyone got their medal than a model came over and gave each guy a stuffed white elephant. And here it is again. I don’t know exactly what that represents but I gather it’s culturally significant to Thais.

That’s why in the Poseidon Adventure when the survivors had to swim underwater Shelly Winters went last.

Well, I think all white elephants were claimed by the king. However, if the king bestowed upon you a white elephant, you were shafted.

You had the expense of the feeding and care of the elephant, and being a gift from the king, you couldn't give it away without some sort of repercussion, assuming you could find somebody to take it.

(I was reading about Thailand, and at one time, in the infamous prison, the guards would make a rattan ball, with nails facing inward, put a prisoner in one, and then roll it out in front of some elephants to kick around, or squash, or whatever.)

One of those white seals should be floating upside down to represent the Thai navy seal who died during the mission.
