Starbucks is going strawless.
The coffee company announced Monday that it will phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020.
The changes will help Starbucks (SBUX) eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said.
Plastic straws contribute to ocean pollution and pose a danger to marine life. Some governments have begun banning them.
To eliminate straws, Starbucks is transitioning from the flat, plastic lids that require them, to ones that feature a raised lip you can drink from. The new designs have drawn comparisons to an adult "sippy cup."
Frappuccino drinks will still be served with dome lids, but with straws made from paper or compostable plastic. Coffee drinkers who prefer straws for other beverages can request the new eco-friendly versions.
Some Starbucks drinks, like cold brew with cold foam, are already served in cups with strawless lids.

As a marketing tool, you tend to finish the liquid a bit faster through a straw than sipping from the glass; then you may decide to have another.

That's the beauty of individuality.
My Dad invented a “Slosh-Proof” cover for Dixie Cups, back in the ‘50’s. Of course, in those days it was made from thin cardboard rather than plastic.
He never patented or marketed it, though.
Excuse me, there are cargo containers and shipwrecks in the ocean too.
Ban wars! Ban trade!
Evidently there are some here who balk at the idea of individuals wanting to use their own free will to purchase what stocks they want.
Sad.
Then only negative I can remember about paper straws was that the ends would get soggy after a while.
A touch of editing: People discover real coffee, Starbucks to declare bankruptcy.
Litterbugs do throw many straws and the paper wrappers on the road. Will this help reduce litter?
sorta like parents popping gummibears for vitamins in front of their kids... A water bottle I got a while back looked perfect for the task, until I opened it and found that instead of a cup-lip it had a stupid NIPPLE the user had to suck on. Oh, I'm sorry...I was drinking out of a cup more than 70 years ago.
Starbucks anti pea shooters.
You ever tried to drink hot coffe from a paper straw?
