Nearly half of Miss Americas board has quit or been forced to resign in the wake of the organizations decision to eliminate the swimsuit competition from the contest, and 22 state pageant leaders are seeking to oust Chairwoman Gretchen Carlson over concerns about the pageants new direction.
Ms. Carlson, a former Miss America and an early leader in the #MeToo movement, announced on June 5 that Miss America was dropping the swimsuit and evening-gown competitions and replacing them with an extended onstage interview. She said it was important to make womens voices heard during a cultural revolution in our country.
Some former directors and state pageant heads said they felt pressured by Ms. Carlson and other executives to choose to end the swimsuit competition or risk having the pageant not being broadcast on television.
When asked for Ms. Carlsons comment, the Miss American Organization said in a statement that no binary choice between swimsuit and a television deal was ever posed.
The TV broadcast is of critical importance to the pageant as it generates a significant amount of the organizations revenue. The organization has long been on precarious financial footing, with a net loss of $575,000 in 2016the latest available figureson revenue of $9.8 million, according to federal filings.
The elimination of the swimsuit competition is testing the ability of a nearly 100-year-old institution to adapt to a fast-changing culture. Miss America started as a swimsuit competition in 1921, at a time when it was considered modern and liberating for women to pose in bathing suits.
Many volunteers who run the state and local competitions that lead up to Miss America said the change has been disorienting.

The Left has but one tactic.
1. Infiltrate
2. Appropriate
3. Purge
They did it with films. They did it with college. Now they’re doing it to geek culture (Star Wars, comic books, gaming). Beauty pageant are just a new front for them.
I believe so, if memory serves me correct it was Miss Universe which allows cross dressing now.
Be sure to set your DVR ! ;-)
Perhaps it's both ! ;-)
I’m sure some lunatic Leftist can come up with a great reason why the swimsuit portion should be dropped, but there is a tip-off here about what is going on.
There’s nothing sexist or objectifying about an evening gown. Women do go to a number of events where an evening gown is sort of a requirement.
There’s nothing wrong with demonstrating you have poise and can function in an evening gown.
You see, it’s not about sex. It’s about anything that shows a woman has the ability to conduct herself with poise, where her looks may come into play, even if it isn’t a sexist setting.
If dear Gretchin Carlson wants to follow through on her goal, then here is what the Miss American pagent should consist of.
1. The contestant will not be shown
2. Her voice will not be aired (a computerized voice will read her responses, just in case she might have a cute voice and skew the public impression)
3. The whole program will consist of interviews on PC issues, where the women (for all you know) will respond on que and be judged according to the latest societal accepted group-think
If they don’t go this route, then it’s just hypocritical to the max.
The last person watching, please turn out the lights...
Dumping her is the only way to save the program.
Forget TV, save time and money, let the contestants stay home and submit online their essays, along with a photo of themself in a burqa. No prize money, woman belong at home....>sarcasm.
I used to watch the Miss America pageant with my family. It was a wholesome event back then. Then the media started to question its relevancy. They’d send the winner on tour and she’d have to apologize before high school students who embarrassed her by asking pointed questions like, aren’t you ashamed of doing this when people are dying of hunger?
That would be Gretchen Carlson, formerly a blonde Miss America and a Fox News Channel talking head.
No one will watch this "beauty" pageant anymore on TV.
Who wants to listen to a bunch of airheads tell us what their perfect date is?
One contestant answered that "perfect date" question with this gem," I like April 10th as my perfect date. Not too cold and not too hot yet."
Put it on the radio and let it die.
I have to admit that I am a fan of whirled peas though!
Women destroy everything.
