Charles George (August 23, 1932–November 30, 1952) was a U.S. Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat on November 30, 1952, during the Korean War. He was fatally wounded when he threw himself on a grenade to protect other soldiers in his company and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

George was born in Cherokee, North Carolina. He entered service at Whittier, North Carolina. At the time of George's death in battle he held the rank of Private First Class in Company C of the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. The action for which he received the Medal of Honor was near Songnae-dong, Korea.

The Medal of Honor was awarded on March 18, 1954. The citation read:

Pfc. George, a member of Company C, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy on the night of November 30, 1952. He was a member of a raiding party committed to engage the enemy and capture a prisoner for interrogation. Forging up the rugged slope of the key terrain feature, the group was subjected to intense mortar and machine gun fire and suffered several casualties. Throughout the advance, he fought valiantly and, upon reaching the crest of the hill, leaped into the trenches and closed with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. When friendly troops were ordered to move back upon completion of the assignment, he and 2 comrades remained to cover the withdrawal. While in the process of leaving the trenches a hostile soldier hurled a grenade into their midst. Pfc. George shouted a warning to 1 comrade, pushed the other soldier out of danger, and, with full knowledge of the consequences, unhesitatingly threw himself upon the grenade, absorbing the full blast of the explosion. Although seriously wounded in this display of valor, he refrained from any outcry which would divulge the position of his companions. The 2 soldiers evacuated him to the forward aid station and shortly thereafter he succumbed to his wound. Pfc. George's indomitable courage, consummate devotion to duty, and willing self-sacrifice reflect the highest credit upon himself and uphold the finest traditions of the military service.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

You aren’t kidding about everything being sticky. YUCK!

My back’s still trying to calm down from vacuuming the other day. The carpets are damp and made it hard to push and pull the vacuum across them. Hard enough on a healthy back but murder on a bum one.

We’re used to having this weather this time of year but dang, we’ve had it since May! We didn’t have the pleasure of enjoying springtime this year.

I’m sorry to hear your back is bothering you, can you take something to help it? Dos Ice or heat help?
A sore back is H*ll!

Your weather has been like this since MAY???
Gosh, I’d never make it!
LOL
Our Spring was very cool, and we still had to heat the house almost to the middle of May~
Then *WHAM*! Hot summer!
One extreme to the other!

Sounds like a good time was had by all....especially you who got to organize “your” territory and the gentleman who got to take his time. That is exactly what my hubby would want to do...and explain EVERY single thing to me in great detail. LOL!

The rain and cooler weather was an awesome surprise around here. Even the kittens got to sleep out in the open this afternoon. LOL!

Heck, the back bothers me all the time - some days more than others. Car accident several years ago. I don’t take any meds other than occasional aspirin to tamp it down. Don’t like the idea of taking prescription pain killers.
Heat and ice do help at least.

It’s been pretty much like this since May. We had a very brief comfortable period, then BAM. It was blazing summer. A few coolish days here and there but not nearly enough.

I recall you mentioning you still had to run your heat while we had our A/C going strong. LOL

Getting to organize the stuff upstairs is a big weight off my shoulders. There’s still a batch of uniforms I couldn’t get to because they put a big box of something up there that blocks access to them.
They need to get something up there to hang more on because I’m running out of space on what’s up there now. Run out of space, no more uniforms can be cleaned.
That’s alright. I’ll just go gung-ho on learning about everything in there in order to be a tour guide. :-) There’s a lot to learn about in that place.

So glad y’all got some good rainfall. Maybe the tide is turning a little for y’all. It’s been far to dry this year.

And the kittehs were undoubtedly happy for the cooler weather.

LOL! I would have but I was off seeing if the rescue efforts in Thailand had started up again.

Nighty night, Sis....and radu, guess I’ll be heading out soon, too. I didn’t sleep that great last night. For some reason the burning that I sometimes have in my legs was worse last night. I finally took an Advil PM but it still took a while to take effect.

See y’all tomorrow night!

Got lucky that you were distracted. :-)

I hope your legs don’t burn so badly tonight so you can get a decent night’s sleep. You’ve missed out on sleep several nights the past week.

Good evening, radu...anymore fireworks over the weekend.

I heard nary a one here. And we’ve had probably 10 drops of rain so far. At least we haven’t needed any fans today.

Spent most of the evening just sitting and chatting with my brother. He leaves at 4:30a via cab for the airport. He’s #10 standby for the slope. He was supposed to leave Friday afternoon, but was too sick. Saturday morning he went to Urgent Care and got meds for a sinus infection rather than a bad cold. It just wasn’t getting better after a week.

Hope your meds let you enjoy the rest of the evening.

Hey there, Kathy.

No, no more fireworks. There were a few fired off Thurs. night and that was it. If the weather isn’t bad New Years Eve, a few will be fired off then.

Ooooo, no fans needed today? Bet y’all are thrilled to have the cool-down. Now you just need the rain!

Ow, ow, ow!!! I feel for your brother! Sinus infections can be excruciating to the point of incapacitating. I hope the meds kick in quickly.
