The Senate's long, hot Supreme Court battle starts Monday
Washington Examiner ^ | July 8, 2018 | Susan Ferrechio

The unveiling of President Trump's Supreme Court nominee on Monday will immediately shift the focus of the Senate to confirming that pick in a few short months, and create a frenzy as GOP and Democratic senators try to steal a handful of votes in the middle that will determine the outcome.

Since 2005, all Supreme Court Justices have been confirmed in less than three months, and Republicans are hoping to stick to that schedule so Trump's nominee is seated for the new Supreme Court term in October.

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, told the Washington Examiner such a time frame is “a reasonable parameter” for the next nominee. “I’d be happy to go faster, but I’m not sure everybody would,” Cornyn said.

To get there, Trump's nominee is expected to quickly start making the rounds to Senate offices for individual interviews. That will be followed later this summer by a yet-to-be-scheduled confirmation hearing that will include written questionnaires from each of the 21 lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But the most important part of the process will be the cajoling of a handful of senators on each side who could either rescue of sink the nominee. With Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., not voting, Republicans hold a 50-49 advantage in the Senate, which means they need to steal a Democrat for every Republican who decides to vote against Trump's pick.

What Republicans are willing to cut their own throats by voting against Trump?

I’ll be disappointed if it isn’t Amy Barrett.

The timing is perfect. Thank you Justice Kennedy for that and your service.

Collins, Murkowski, certain other weak & media-pliable Senators ...

that's why Trump should pick Amy Barrett - makes her opponents look anti-woman, plus she's from Indiana, which forces Donnelly into a corner

"just sayin"

“What Republicans...…….?

Seems there are a hell of a lot who claim to be “reps” but turn out to be in name only. “Fakes”!

McCain is not voting. Doesn’t it say somewhere if a member of Congress can’t do his job he should step down? Right now he’s probably in a drug induced coma. Whatever he is, he’s not a senator. And don’t be surprised if he emails his vote in. Or SOMEBODY emails it in.

That is one thing he or his handlers cannot do. He must be physically on the Senate floor to vote.

They say Trump will need a Ginsberg replacement and best not to use this pick for a female and wait till the next time, which many are sure will come and may even another after that.
Look at her she is toast

The Supreme Court vacancy should make for an interesting four months. Probably it won’t be filled until after the next congress is seated.

Just like Justice Thomas’ opponents were exposed as “racist”, right?

F that female crap waiting for Ginsberg. If the female is the best one I don’t even care if she’s an ‘evolving’ one. 7 kids. Kinda like Sarahs’ 5. Look what they did to her, especially over Trig. Now they’ll say she’s an inattentive mother, working so hard she has to hire nannies-not like the rest of us.

Like someone further down said: “They say Trump will need a Ginsberg replacement and best not to use this pick for a female and wait till the next time,”

I agree. Plus it’s always been Hardiman, since the Gorsuch choice. Hardiman was first runner up then, what’s different now?

“I’ll be disappointed if it isn’t Amy Barrett.”

No disappointment here - save that shot to replace RBG in the “female seat.” It would cause even more Demo head explosions then than it will now.

If the nominee is of any value at all, Murkowski and Collins are definite “no” votes.

If the nominee is what WE would want, they will be joined by Corker, Flake, Burr, and Sasse.

There is a 56-44 pro-abortion majority in the Senate, and probably a larger majority that wants the Court to go on making laws so the Senators can go on getting rich.

With a 1-vote majority and hostile Media, we need all the advantages we can get

Ever since the “Access Hollywood” tape, Dems and their media pals have been out to smear Trump (and Republicans) as anti-woman ... they’re just waiting for Trump to pick “yet another old guy deciding women’s rights”

picking Barrett would throw this all back in their faces
