WASHINGTON Democratic senators running for re-election in red states where President Donald Trump remains popular face an agonizing choice over his coming Supreme Court nominee: Vote to confirm the pick and risk demoralizing Democratic voters ahead of the midterm elections, or stick with the party and possibly sacrifice their own seats and any chance at a Democratic majority in 2019.
The actions of a handful of Senate Democrats struggling to hold their seats in those states notably Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia will have broad implications for the party at a critical political juncture.
A decision by one or all of them to try to bolster their standing with Republican-leaning voters in their states by backing the presidents nominee would undermine Democratic leaders as they try to sustain party unity. And if their votes put the presidents choice on the court, it could hasten the move to the left by the partys aggressive activist core, while intensifying the clamor for new, more confrontational leadership.
But if they hold together on a no vote, those senators could not only surrender their own seats, but by expanding the Republican majority, they could also narrow the path of Democrats to a Senate majority for years to come by ceding those states to Republicans.
It is a terrible vote, Jennifer Duffy, a longtime nonpartisan analyst of Senate races for the Cook Political Report, said about the showdown, which will escalate Monday with the scheduled official announcement of the nominee.
It could not come at a worse time. A final confirmation vote will probably be called just weeks before an election in which Democrats are defending a sprawling battleground, including 10 states carried by Trump,

Winning! All I can Dd is “bwaaaaahahahah”.
I wish we were dark green. I love that color. Red is ok. Actually better then blue.
“...The left will riot and dismember the country state by state if Trump gets 4 picks....”
Let em bring it on. I’m just an average freedom-loving, law-abiding American that wants to be left alone and to live my days in peace while seeing my kids & grandkids grow up in peace and freedom. The Left is threatening our way of life and the rule of law every single day. It’s now reached a point where anybody with an IQ of 10 can see that there is no co-exisitng with these azzholes. And like many Americans, I’m totally fricken’ sick to death of these insane commie POSs trying to destroy our country, our flag and our very way of life.
Let em bring it on. They have NO IDEA what will come to them. These communist bassturds are pushing ...and they got a holy hell walloping coming to em. Their scalps will adorn many a war spear before it’s over. THAT is what the Left is gonna bring to America if something isn’t lawfully done with them soon. People are sick to death of their pure, utter, lying BS. Bring it.
Uncle Joe's Senate seat appears to be relatively safe at this point in the election cycle. Despite WV being Trump country, Manchin's opponent Morrissey is considered an outsider(from New Jersey) and appears to be a weak campaigner. Manchin may be playing the odds that the Democrats take control of the Senate and might be rewarded with a committee chairmanship for being loyal to Schumer.
Voters lie when responding to polls, even if it is a robocall poll. This year, as they did in 2016, they will lie about their support of Trump and for Republican candidates. It’s not socially acceptable, and they will tell the same lies that they use at cocktail parties and cook-outs. Their behavior at the voting booth will be different and the Democrats are going to be disappointed about the results.
Gee, why don’t the do like I did, see the light and switch parties?
Or the Cryptkeeper himself.
What if a democrat actually gave a candidate a fair shake and voted for them or against them based on something other than electoral politics?
I know, I know. Never gonna happen.
If I were President Trump, Id be passing the word quietly to dem senators in red states that if they dont want to be severely testored, they better give his nominee to the Supreme Court a favorable vote before October 1.
I can envision a whole lot of Great Falls, MT types of campaign appearances between the vote and election day if the nominee goes down because of purely partisan politics....And not just in red and purple states.
> Yep Schumer screwed up badly in retrospect, by doing the filibuster fight over the Gorsuch nomination.
It wasn’t even retrospect -— a ton of editorials were screaming at him about this exact scenario. Kind of like how Reid was told point-blank he would regret removing the filibuster for cabinet posts.
They all thought Queen Hillary would be ruling now.
Needing help
OH (Trump won by 8): Sherrod Brown, seeking his 3rd term in Ohio (GOP candidate is Jim Renacci, current polling at 51-38 for Brown)
WI (Trump won by 0.8%): Tammy Baldwin (AUG 14 Primary, Vukmir likely GOP candidate but polls behind 49-40)
PA (Trump won by 0.7%): Bob Casey (Lou Barletta is considered a weak challenger, 47-32 is current poll)
MICH (Trump won by 0.2%): Debbie Stabenow, 40 yrs in MI politics (AUG 7 Primary, Stabenow polling 51-30 over both likely opponents)
Danger for DEMS
FL (Trump won by 1): Bill Nelson-D (AUG 24 Primary, current polling has Nelson behind Rick Scott 46-41)
IN (Trump by 19): Joe Donnelly-D already polling behind 48-47 to Mike Braun
MO (Trump by 18): Claire McCaskill-D up, but only 48-44 over Josh Hawley
MT (Trump by 21): Jon Tester-D up 52-44 over Matt Rosendale in May, but Trump visited recently
ND (Trump by 36): Heidi Heitkamp-D down 48-44 to Kevin Kramer-R
WV (Trump by 42): Joe Manchin-D was polling behind Patrick Morrissey (44-46 on MAY 10), but now up 50-43 (JUN 19)
That's a +3, with 3 more in the air, but...
There's 4 current GOP seats in danger:
NEV (Trump lost by 2): Jacky Rosen-D up 45-41 early over incumbent Dean Heller-R
ARIZ (Trump won by 4): AUG 28 Primary to replace Jeff Flake (RINO)... Krysten Sinema-D polling ahead of Martha McSally-R early, 39-32, with 20+% undecided.
TENN (Trump won by 26): Corker (RINO) retiring, Primary AUG 2, Phil Bredesen-D polled over Marsha Blackburn-R, 46-43 on MAY 1.
MISS (Trump won by 18): Special Election Jungle Primary to replace retired Thad Cochran... leader is current appointee Cindy Hyde-Smith-R over Mike Espy-D and Chris McDaniel-R, 30-22-17. There is a likely runoff if nobody gets 50%. She is polling ahead of Espy 46-34, head to head.
So it's about a +2 in the Senate at the moment. (Currently 51-47-2)
The other 20 races are pretty much already decided. 13 DEM (WA, CA MINNx2, VA, CT, RI, MASS, NJ, NY, MD, DEL, HI) and 5 GOP (MISS, TX, UT, NEB, WY) and 2 IND (Maine and VT)
Yes I can see it would be terrible for these hollow subhumans to have to choose between their party and their country.
