Despite what many of us want to believe, President Donald Trump is the front-runner in 2020. If you supported him in 2016, you have little reason to regret your choice -- he's working hard to fulfill all his campaign promises. Sure, the polls often show that Trump's approval rating is underwater. But voters are a lot more than just data points graphed onto projections.
No incumbent president in recent history has presided over a strong economy, not been enmeshed in a ground war and lost the next election. So, for those of us who desperately want to see a new president, just telling ourselves that a majority of the voters in key states will see what we see and feel how we feel isn't enough to actually win. It's going to take more than the constant tearing of garments and endless howls of outrage to beat him. It's going to take an outside factor -- like Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement.
There's no easily foreseeable reason the Senate won't be able to confirm whomever Trump nominates. In theory, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, could join the 49 Democrats and slow the process, but it may not be realistic to expect every Democrat to stick together, particularly ones up for re-election in red states....

Could the court continue to define more strictly the definition of life? The heartbeat and blood flow comes at about 5-7 weeks, iirc.
At some point, they have to admit that the only route to life is through a mother, and that that mother herself availed herself of that route.
So, it is a “right of way” to an encircled property case in a way.
“If Roe v Wade is overturned, abortion will be legalized in all 50 states within a year.”
http://www.pewforum.org/religious-landscape-study/compare/views-about-abortion/by/state/ shows 11 states with majority support for making abortion illegal in most or all cases:
Arkansas
Mississippi
Alabama
West Virginia
Kentucky
Louisiana
Tennessee
South Carolina
Indiana
North Dakota
Utah
Majority support for making abortion illegal does not matter
State legislators knocking up their girlfriends and getting bribes from Planned Parenthood are what matters.
How would a case be decided by 2020?
If the justices were smart, and they are not, then if given the opportunity they would simply uphold the state restrictions on the case at bar and rule that Roe was wrongly decided and that the situation as it existed prior to Roe is restored; i.e., that the issue of the right to life and the abortion issue will be the province of the states sin state jurisdictions and congress in Federal jsurisdictions.
I dont think they will engage in making scientific definitions of life. If they did that, then they would have to declare all abortions except court ordered abortions for purposes of self defense to be unconstitutional. If Trump can appoint 2 more justices before leaving office, I think Roe will be overturned. I dont trust Roberts.
The Dems seem to be 100% sure it will be overturned. I see it no more than 50-50.
I don’t trust Roberts either. I think he will cling fast to the stare decisis thing.
There is a certain logic to having an idea that certain areas of law don’t need to be revisited and that a judge is on firm footing, but there are a huge number of people on both the left and the right who’ve challenged the constitutional reasoning of Roe. Just read another article on it the other day.
Ruth Badger Ginsberg is on that list. But she would never vote to overturn it.
There is a movie in the works that shows that the Roe v Wade case was built on a completely false statement of facts. A lot of the people who were working on it have quit over fears of being blacklisted.
The Roberts court has begun to form a pattern of punting back to the states rather than actively writing law that will affect generations, as the Marshall court did. This has the effect of trimming previous decisions down an inch at a time and allowing future discussion.
So Roe may end up surviving, but it will look like a skeleton after a school of piranha fish hit it.
Fake News!
.
Foolish statement!
more than 60% of Americans are opposed to abortion.
.
RBG is old and sick. Wonder if she’ll last through this and another term for Pres. Trump?
The irony would be rich! But it is not out of the believable realm of possibility. The left has already hoped for nuclear war, recession, terrorist attacks, etc. in hopes that Trump would be tarnished and lose the next election. How sick is that?
So convincing them that if Roe V Wade gets overturned, Trump is out, might not be that far off. They would throw "women's rights" out the window to get Trump? Shame on them. What would they call for next, the sacrifice of virgins? Voo-Doo dolls?
Consequently, I agree with you. Roe V Wade would not be "overturned". But what could happen is that the judgement in the case be nullified and the power to make laws on the issue be returned to the states or the Congress. Of course the media and the left would still call this "overturned". They don't understand the difference.
The original Roe decision said the states COULD ban third trimester abortion, just not all abortion. With a majority-conservative court, states can ban third-trimester abortions with some confidence that the SC won't find any further Constitutional penumbras mandating such be permitted.
And the Doe v Bolton ruling issued the same day said they couldn't.
Last week the news was the Food Network was beating CNN in ratings. So, if Trump is good for ratings, they must have REALLY been in the toilet.
I keep reading predictions that Trump will alienate voters by keeping his campaign promises. So far, that hasn’t happened, and I doubt he’s worried about it this time either.
More CNN wishful thinking.......
One of the speakers was that woman senator from Maryland who was so butt ugly that she couldn't get laid in a gigolo house with a fistful of dollars.
So you'll have less than 50 States with abortion, so what??!!
