A former Thai navy diver who joined in search efforts to rescue 12 boys and their coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand has died.
Saman Kunan, 38, lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex after delivering supplies to the missing group, officials said.
He could not be revived by his colleagues.
The diver had previously left the navy but had returned to help rescue operations.
"A former SEAL who volunteered to help died last night around 2am," Chiang Rai Deputy Governor Passakorn Boonyaluck told reporters at the rescue site.
"His job was to deliver oxygen. He did not have enough on his way back."

R.I.P.
This is so sad. But I thought they already have some American SEALs there, too.
RIP for this hero.
Elon Musk is trying to come up with some ideas right now, including some form of inflatable tubing. Lots of interesting comments about it on twitter. I dont know how to copy a tweet to post it here.
Oh man. I really hate caves. I’m claustrophobic already, so this story freaks me out. I keep following it because I’m worried for the kids. Now this poor hero diver dies. Uhggg..I’m so sad for all involved.
I’m saying my prayers.
Just recalled the story of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omayra_Sánchez
Tragedy. And it points to the very real risks involved in bringing the trapped kids out using SCUBA.
A guy from our dive club is a cave diver. They have a device that pings to a surface sensor and they've mapped miles of underwater caves down in Florida. So this is technically feasible. Drilling through that rock... I don't know. What is the geology of the place? Risk of collapse?
Are you sure that he was a Christian?
Is the team coach going to be beat to pulp by a pissed off father before the law gets to prosecute him for homicide? What’s the over under?
Actually finding the correct place to drill is pretty easy with today’s tech. The risk of caving the roof in is a valid concern. The big problem is getting a big enough rig to the drill site - very rough terrain.
“if the path is too narrow for the diver with oxygen tanks strapped on to get through”
Wonder if a long hose would be helpful, like deep sea divers used to use. The hose or an accompanying cable could also be used to pull the divers through. An accompanying electrical wire would allow communication with people on the outside — can you talk inside a diver’s mask?
I think the worry is the cave could completly flood if heavy rain continues., fn nightmare.
wonder if they could dig a series of test holes, and use triangulation, to help locate the cave if they can bang on the walls and be heard..
area may be too remote and terrain too steep for it,
RIP. God Bless you sir.
Where in my post do I say he is a Christian?
They have folks from all over the world.
I was wondering if there are any kind of small rescue suits from subs that could be used? I saw something on a show the other night.
“(Hmm - why was the diver bringing in air tanks? “
Early on it was reported the divers staged tanks along the entire route to where the boys were as it’s impossible to make the dive there and back on one tank of air.
Those were their “SEALS”
What difference does that make? He was a hero who gave his life to try to save children, that's what matters.
It’s called a hookah rig. But there are limitations as to how muche air volume you can move down the hose. Plus dealing with another iteman that risks entanglement... in the dark, in dirty water, with limited ability for another diver to assist. This rescue is fraught with risk.
My wife was telling me yesterday that she read they are contemplating leaving them in place until October, when the monsoon season ends. I sure hope that is not the case. Granted, they are taking them supplies, but I think being stuck there for that length of time could result in disastrous consequences.
