Nicholas Bade showed up at an Air Force recruiting office on an icy morning in January, determined to be one of the first transgender recruits to enlist in the military.
He was in top shape, and had earned two martial arts black belts. He had already aced the military aptitude test, and organized the stack of medical records required to show he was stable and healthy enough to serve. So he expected to be called for basic training in a month, maybe two at the most.
Six months later, hes still waiting. And so are nearly all other transgender recruits who have tried to join up since a federal court ordered the Trump administration not to ban them from the military.
The Obama administration announced a plan in 2016 for the armed services to begin accepting transgender recruits at the start of this year. But before the plan could take effect, President Trump abruptly reversed course, announcing on Twitter in July 2017 that the military would no longer accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity, because the military cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Military leaders were given little notice of the change, which has left a wake of controversy and confusion.
Civil rights groups immediately sued, claiming that a blanket ban was unconstitutional, and the courts blocked the new rules. Three federal judges hearing separate cases issued injunctions against the ban last fall that cleared the way in theory at least for transgender recruits to start enlisting on Jan. 1.
Since then, scores have applied but it appears almost none are being accepted.
The Defense Department refused requests for statistics on transgender enlistments.

Also, that the article needs to point out that the person "organized the stack of medical records required to show he was stable and healthy enough to serve" makes me question that, as well.
Just like those who talk about how rich, smart, or honest they are, people who tell you how well-adjusted they are....generally aren't.
They used to claim it was because society didn't cater to their fantasy, but the last four years of the ObaMao administration was spent doing exactly that and the rate did not go down.
Serving in the military is NOT an entitlement. Why is that so difficult to understand?
Good news for a change.
Wouldn’t a stack of medical records indicate that something was NOT right?
Think about it just in terms of costs. An average soldier, sailor, airman or marine costs millions of dollars over his time of service when you figure in training, housing, equiping, paying, deploying, etc. I remember seeing a stat that by the time a recruit shows up for basic training, the service is already something like $70,000 in the hole. I’m not even talking about special forces costs, just the standard variety. The military knows suicide rates for these people are high. They also know that they come with more general mental health issues. The services want to know that they will be able to recoup their costs over the life of the contract. In that way, the military is similar to an insurance company in the way it tries to mitigate loss.
Our military was in Iraq for years, and; is still in Afghanistan. Two Special Forces teams jumped in one led the northern alliance and the other the old head of the country. They ran the Taliban out in days not years. Another member of our US armed forces conventional military had it’s infantry on the ground. All they did was dig fox holes and such.
Enough of the make believe time. Those folks are mentally ill. The military is not the place for their Psychodramas to be played out.
If they think they are "transgender" then they are not mentally stable. Next case.
> The military cannot be ready to fight in having to deal with this flotsam. <
I read an article where the author argued that our decisive win in WW2 gave the US an unhealthy superiority complex. Since then we have thrown caution to the wind.
Trans people are mentally unstable and should not be allowed in the armed forces with big guns and rockets and stuff. What is the problem with that?
The military is not a social experiment. Also its absurd that the taxpayers should have to pay for this elective surgery that does not enhance their ability to kill people and break things - the militarys real purpose. Let them pay for that themselves - and not in the military where they dont belong.
This loser has medical records that show it to be stable? What sort of quack doctor would find that??? Possibly a tranny doctor.
I am no trans and hit a bazillion red tape to get in the Air Guard checking on my full medical history
If you are trans and take hormones, then yeah, you will be checked for your own physical and mental safety
Nothing mean about this, it is how government has always worked, but liberals all of a sudden hate government and red tape they impose when it impedes them
Just look at AirBND made by flaming anti Trump homos pushing socialism yet bypassing all zoning laws and hotel regs to suit their millions in profits as electronic slum lords
The military is done for. The 75th Rangers and 101st Airborne opened to women a couple months ago. Gender integration of combat arms is going full steam and nobody is stopping it, not Trump, not Mattis. But regardless of what Teump does to fix it, the next dem will reverse back. Dems of the past, Carter, Clinton, bad as they were, left the social control and structure of the military alone for the most part. Under Obama we got the removal of DADT, women in combat arms, trannies, not to mention thousands of deaths from restrictive ROE. Now that the libs have decided that thr military is a social playground for them to eff over, we're done.
Mental cases are prima facie unfit for positions of responsibility.
I once read a letter written by a Transgender who underwent the surgery describing the recovery process....It was like something out of a horror novel and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for this person because he/she/whatever quickly realized what a horrible mistake it was and was trying to warn others.
The military does NOT need to coddle those with mental disorders.
While stating that homosexuality is NOT a mental disorder is debatable, but transgenderism is demonstrably a mental illness.
This is the only reason they are wanting to enlist. To have someone else pay.
Why would standing matter to today’s judges. They make the rules up as they go along.
