President Trump is justifiably proud of passing tax reform last December, telling audiences because of our tax cuts, you can keep more of your hard-earned money. Hes right: American taxpayers will save $75 billion this year and $189 billion next year, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.
Yet the presidents tariffs on imports could negate much of the tax relief hes been bragging about. These levies are not paid by foreign countries or companies. They are passed on to American consumers in the form of higher prices for either foreign or U.S.-made goods.
The Trump tariffs are now clawing back tax savings at a rate of roughly $10.6 billion per year. The levies already in place include 25% on steel (imports in 2017 were an estimated $23.4 billion), 30% on solar panels ($8.5 billion), 10% on aluminum ($18 billion) and 20% on washing machines ($1.8 billion).
Thats chump change compared with what may be coming. On July 6, a 25% tariff kicks in on 818 Chinese imports worth $34 billion, costing Americans another $8.5 billion a year. If China retaliates, Mr. Trump has said hell slap a 10% tariff on an additional $200 billion of Chinese exports. The president warned last week that if Beijing responds a second time, he could levy a tariff on $200 billion more in Chinese exports. And an administration proposal for a 25% tariff on 284 Chinese exports to the U.S., whose value was $16 billion in 2017, is pending.

If you wish, feel free.
Much of the current bloated government is so very venal. By means of leaning on government, crony business gets filthy lucre thrown its way and furthers the careers of the bureaucrats
That’s what puts the depth into the deep state. Bureaucrats in sinecures. Even a very liberal friend of mine agrees that much, though we disagree on overall visions. I see God as a much greater power, and a power not needing government to preside over a utopia to bring blessing, than he does.
I believe history shows us that Christian ideas were the water in which the USA was spawned. At that point in history, North America with its wild and woolly frontiers was distinctly secondary to the ancient societies of Europe. And so those who wanted freedom to worship went there. It wasn’t utter utopia for them as denominations squabbled for control. But they ultimately came to a detente. And there were flies in the ointment, most notably chattel slavery, which ought to have been viewed as ruled out by any Christianized society when the bible urged masters to “give up threatening.”
I don’t think the “gay wars” are in vain. They will force a rethink in American Christendom. We can’t as Christians merely say something is bad, and expect the world to agree. We have to say something else is good and then prove it is.
A dip stick is great, if it is in the oil that matters.
Karl Rove’s is not.
Rove, get your face on board that very next train!
You, evil bastard.
Good point. Thanks mrsmel.
He’s rather Bush-y.
Agreed...
I knew I’d find someone from the “Dip Sticks of America League” in the audience.
DSOA League. Funny
Well, Rove, your way hasn’t worked so why not let the world’s largest economy flex its muscle a little.
But seriously... I believe we’ve been watching an evolution process since the days of Clinton. Many lauded and celebrated GWB because, hey, he’s not Clinton or a Democrat. But we found out eventually that GWB had harmfully lax views in other areas. Rove is on the old Bush train. It took Trump with his new Americanism to get to the next step. I don’t think it’ll be the ultimate thing either. Trump is rough. But we don’t want to be rough for roughness’ sake. A fitting sequel to this movement in US history may be Mike Pence, who may be the I-like-Ike of the mid and late 20’s.
Thanks for all the help Karl..../sar
Your time arrived and you blew it.
Karl was a man for his time, when we were still evolving through the Bush stage. I see no personal need to be rude to him. We need to let all and sundry know that we aspire to a better place.
I remember carefully reading that well thought out item back then and find it hard to believe it was 8 years ago.
One example of Rove I remember from 2008 in Michigan was that when my wife and I went to Dearborn or Allen Park for lunch or to Greenfield Village, we had to often wait for a police blockade to end as limos above on I-94 went by—Cheney usually or else Bush. They were repeatedly pandering to Muslims in Dearborn (highest population outside the Middle East) to get them to vote for Bush.
As always, Rove’s strategy of incremental shavings off Dem blocs was a waste of time. More importantly, we who wanted the non-establishment conservative candidates were put off as well as ignored. Michigan’s turn red was not due to Rove.
Macomb County Reagan Democrats (where I was raised) and non-voting white males waited for the arrival of Trump to get energized and put him over the top. Burned too many times before Trump. Rove was an albatross, not a genius in Michigan.
I look forward to your astute analysis for the coming midterms. (I was your fan as a lurker because I wanted to avoid controversy and attacks as a poster.)
After I had sent that I thought you might have perceived it as a swipe.
It was just a lark, meaning you supported dip sticks.
HTR, I understand where you are coming from.
I want you to think about it.
Could a guy like Pence handle the press? I’m not sold on that.
Trump is a down and dirty street fighter. They press is dumbfounded, because they’ve never dealt with a politician who is willing to get in the mud with them, and kick their ass.
I know some folks see Trump as too far over the top. I’m tellin’ ya, you may be quite sorry if we find someone more “polished”. The press will walk all over them.
Try to remember back when Bush refused to engage. Almost ever...
Trump is tweeting within minutes on any issue that strikes him.
Perfect IMO.
We never have to guess what’s on his mind, and it’s incredible that it was just what as on ours.
Well, I look for good faces on things. Karl Rove is a man of a previous era. Trump has jolted us into a new era.
I don’t see Pence as a static entity. I think he will inherit firmness from Donald Trump, without the crudeness. Pence may be one to let hostile press simply thunder over his head without paying it attention.
He was not a genius anywhere. He was all memory of data without the analytic ability to make any really effective use of the data. (See Karl Rove)
Rove mishandled election after election.
But I think also there will be more friendly press than there is today, so Pence can use the friendly press while disagreeing quietly with the unfriendly press.
I wish I had time: but with the stakes so high, I don’t know if I want to do a SWOT (Strength / Weakness / Opportunity / Threat) analysis on the GOP or on our President; tho’ I’d LOVE to do one on the Dems.
