Campaigns to secede from U.S., divide into new states compete for support
As far as Paul Preston is concerned, three Californias is one California too many.
The vice president and co-founder of the New Californiamovement, Mr. Preston wants to see the state divided in two along rural-urban lines, not split into three under venture capitalist Tim Draper’s Cal 3 initiative, which goes before the voters in November.
“With Draper, he makes sure every area has an urbanized zone that will ultimately be blue. You still have the rural-urban thing going on in his formula,” said Mr. Preston, who lives in Yuba City. “The rural people will be shafted again.”

Is there any research out there that explains how this would be done, Constitutionally? I thought new states had to be admitted to the Union individually? If California dissolves itself into three separate territories, does that mean California is gone and any or all of the three new entities have to be admitted individually? Like before the Civil War, we don’t need any more slave states!
Beginning in Reconstruction, and for several decades thereafter, the two states disputed the new state’s share of the pre-war Virginia government’s debts, which had mostly been incurred to finance public infrastructure improvements, such as canals, roads, and railroads under the Virginia Board of Public Works. Virginians—led by former Confederate General William Mahone—formed a political coalition based upon this: the Readjuster Party. Although West Virginia’s first constitution provided for the assumption of a part of the Virginia debt, negotiations opened by Virginia in 1870 were fruitless, and in 1871, Virginia funded two-thirds of the debt and arbitrarily assigned the remainder to West Virginia. The issue was finally settled in 1915, when the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that West Virginia owed Virginia $12,393,929.50.[51] The final installment of this sum was paid in 1939.

A far older, and far better option is the State Of Jefferson. The bombing of pearl harbor sidelined the idea, that in recent decades has (re)gained traction.

Yep. California splitting up is fine. The division proposed makes no sense. Lump the bay area and Sacramento in with that coastal strip going down to Orange County. That would make sense.
However, it's even younger than being in it's infancy. Of all of those central and southern CA counties, none of the local govt's have official support on record and many would be a major uphill battle due to the demographic changes of just the last decade or so.
The only one that has not just support from the residents, but also has local political support in the counties is the State of Jefferson.
The New California state idea looks fantastic though. Seems there is a growing movement in CA to break the state up.

That is the two state proposal I would agree with that one. The three state division that is on the ballot creates 2 dark blue liberal states and one purple state.
The “New California” plan looks pretty good. Basically separating the rural from the population centers. If enacted, this would certainly result in a new California that was red to the core.
So here is my entirely theoretical question:
if the three Californias thing passes and California votes to secede, do all three of them secede, or just one, or two, or what?

Take the coast line from Mexico border into & including Marin & Sonoma counties & make that the new area.
Leaver the rest of the state alone.
Using the currently proposed split will leave the very densely populated San Francisco Bay Area to out vote & overwhelm the rest of N Calif. That area to the north is quite Conservative, but not densely populated.
Wasn’t ther a Cal6 proposal at one point?
Why is the capital of Northern California San Francisco when Sacramento, the existing capital, would be in that state?
The State of Cascade?
Wasn’t there at one time a move to consolidate Eastern Washington with part of Idaho?
