White House releases sweeping proposal to reorganize government
The Hill ^ | 06/21/18 | Peter Sullivan

The White House on Thursday unveiled a sweeping plan to reorganize how the federal government is structured, including controversial proposals to impose work requirements on assistance programs.

“Businesses change all the time,” said White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney. “Government doesn't, and one of the things you get when you hire a businessman to become president is you bring this attitude from the private sector.”

The plan touches a wide range of agencies, but one of its main proposals is to move the food stamp program, officially known as SNAP, out of the Department of Agriculture and into the Department of Health and Human Services. That department would then be renamed the Department of Health and Public Welfare.

A new Council on Public Assistance would then oversee programs gathered in one place, including food stamps and Medicaid, and have the power to impose uniform work requirements in those programs, a move strongly opposed by Democrats.

The reorganization plan faces tough odds in Congress, where even aside from the dispute over work requirements, any reorganization faces opposition from congressional committees that could lose power if their jurisdictions change.

ETC...

What I don’t get is Trump’s idea to merger the departments of Education and Labor. Labor and Commerce might make sense, but I don’t see that particular pairing.

Shutter them both along with the others. Return all health, education, labor, welfare, etc, functions to the states where they belong per the constitution.

departments of Education and Labor.

A big part of education's purpose is to prepare people for a job/profession. (labor)

They couldn’t get 50 Republican votes for something as mild as $15 billion in take backs. They couldn’t get 40 Republican votes for this.

Why not a one step process: eliminate?

I agree. I’d like to close about 9 Federal departments (which irritated the Ron Paul crowd. he was proposing to close five of them, and I called him a statist for leaving too many in place.)

But if you’re going to do a pairing, why those two?

“Corporations helping to intern HS graduates for 2 yr college ed”

This would be OUTSTANDING if they implement it by the time I graduate high school in 1991 ;-).

Seriously, I knew what I wanted to do by the time I was frigging 12. I probably would have done a LOT better in high school (i.e. not waste time) had the focus been shifted more towards computers and electronics.

All things considered, I could have finished two years towards an EE degree by the time I completed high school and more than likely would have earned a BSEE before I could legally purchase a beer (not like legalities ever stopped me :-) ). Couple that with real work experience and I could have started earning more in my *very* early 20s with less debt.

Of course, I am assuming things would have gone ideally ... but knowing the way I was (and to some extent still am), I would have earned that degree as described.

High school, as it is structured today, is a complete waste of time for a majority of the students stuck in that stupid institution. I certainly see how it benefits two “cliques” of people : the college bound academics (and, by that, I mean a career in academia) and the jocks. Outside of that, everyone else is stuck in a system that doesn’t do as much for them as it could.

Move the departments to other cities and towns, especially those without ballet and opera. Watch the attrition.

I would guess that this might be on the legislative agenda after the mid-terms, but it is out there now to start the debate/food fight.

...and it is also a good electoral issue for Republicans.

“a cheese pizza is regulated by the FDA for safety, while a pepperoni pizza is regulated by the Department of Agriculture.”

Yes, Government bureaucracy needs to be pruned back on a regular basis. It is long overdue.

Be nice if we could get term limits in place soon.

Problems with the congress today are related to self interest being more important than nations interest.
