Trump is right to follow the law but remove kids from the blast zone:
The Boston Herald ^ | 06-20-2018 | Herald Staff

Any thoughtful American who is satisfied to make a judgment on the Trump administration based only on a snapshot of the situation along the Southern border is either a facile opportunist or a rabid tribalist whose confirmation bias has been fortified by the chum in the water.

We cannot tell the story of little children separated from their parents without first laying out the facts.

Crossing the border illegally is a crime. It is right that the laws be enforced — that is a primary responsibility of the federal government, and it has been sanctioned by the people through their elected representatives.

Kirstjen Nielsen, the Homeland Security secretary, laid the situation out on Monday, saying, “In the last three months we’ve seen illegal immigration on our Southern border exceed 50,000 people each month, multiples over each month last year. Since this time last year, there has been a 325 percent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 percent increase in family units entering the country illegally.”

Nielsen drew a daunting picture of the logistical challenge. “Over the last 10 years, there has been a 1,700 percent increase in asylum claims, resulting in asylum backlog of 600,000 cases. Since 2013, the United States has admitted more than half a million illegal immigrant minors and family units from Central America, most of whom today are at large in the United States.”

It is a big problem. Platitudes like “Trump could make a single phone call” to help the kids, are disingenuous.

Similarly, any attempt to use children as pawns on either side of the issue is repugnant.

Time to fix it.

It’s called engorging the lumpenproletariat - in order to overturn the apple cart.

on either side of the issue

This "issue" only has one side.

The laws in question are not Trump's laws, and they are not Obama's laws.

THEY ARE THE PEOPLES LAWS, passed by our representatives in Congress assembled and signed by Presidents, and, until repealed (which Congress is CLEARLY unwilling to do), they remain in effect.

It is OUTRAGEOUS that anyone believes that the president should be derelict in his duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, as if he could retroactively veto valid laws.

That’s weird - liberal news media editors saying “crossing the border illegally is a crime.” Well, no real need for the rest of the op-ed.

Sure wish they’d give us the names of those who voted for this policy.

Hope her statement was read by Franklin Graham — and all the other virtue signalers and Bible quoters on this issue. And while they’re at it, they can study the scriptures about needing to hear both sides of a story before passing judgment.

We complained, rightly so, when Obama used his ‘phone and pen’ to circumvent the law.
Is this a trap set by Schumer for Trump?

“Crossing the border illegally is a crime.”

No. It is a civil offense. We distinguish between civil law and criminal law in this country.

Children are separated from their parents under “civil law” every day. Your premise is patently false.

Distortion of the issue with terminology is propping up the story. When a single parent is arrested for a crime, the state’s Child Protective Services Department takes the children and houses them in state run facilities.

If we just say that the children are removed and placed in group homes by the US Health and Human Services Dept, just as they would be in any state, that might make this easier to understand.

Crossing the border illegally is a crime.

Yeah ... people seem to forget that. Overstaying your visa is also a crime. People seem to forget that, too. There's no such thing as a "non-criminal" illegal alien. They're ALL criminals.

Deport All Criminal Aliens.

‘Time to fix it.’.............

OK, how about this novel idea?. Anyone caught sneaking into American illegally and dragging children (their own or someone else’s), when caught are NOT separated but collectively and immediately shipped back to the country from which they came? There would be no parent/child separation on American soil.......

One huge improvement would be, the media would have to find something else to blame Trump for.

Isn’t it amazing how the progressives cry about the children but then are for late term abortion and the neglect law forcing hospitals to leave children who survived their abortion to die unattended. Everytime I see these pos cry for the children I want to throw up.

No, Crossing the border illegally is a crime, punishable by both criminal fines and imprisonment. See section (a) at the link. Section (b) specifies civil penalties in addition to the criminal punishments specified in section (a). Under sections (c) and (d) various forms of immigration fraud are felony crimes. Under section (a), repeated illegal entry is also a felony crime.

I can hardly believe it. A fairly honest editorial about this illegal immigration problem from a Boston newspaper. Read the entire editorial.

What part of “shall be subject to a civil penalty” don’t we understand? There is a difference between a civil offense and a criminal offense, just as there are lawyers who practice civil law and criminal law. Whole different schools.

Of course there is illegality involved in crossing the border, but it is not criminal.
