The Dow started with a Railroad index, now the Dow Jones Transportation Average.

Then they came up with the Industrials Average, which is supposed to give a general picture of how the economy is doing.

Companies like Walgreens, McDonald's, Home Depot, American Express, and Travelers Insurance are thought to give as good a picture of the market's condition as companies like Apple, 3M, Microsoft, IBM, Procter and Gamble, Nike, and Boeing that actually make things.

If there's a problem, it's more with the economy than with the Dow. Like they say, we don't make things anymore. There are no car or steel companies in the Dow Industrials. Still, the economy is doing well, in spite of the weakness of heavy industry.

Car and steel companies stopped leading the economy and were replaced in the Dow Industrials by high tech and financial services companies.

If Ford and GM and US Steel were still in the Dow it would look like the country was doing worse than it is.

They need to change the name and seperate the old industrial data from the new consumer economy. Pretending that it means anything along its long continuum of content changes is ridiculous.

Yep, Immelt was an unmitigated disaster as CEO. Classic Ivy League jock with more self-confidence than ability. The old Buffett line comes to mind... “look for companies that are so good even an idiot could run them... because sooner or later one will.”

BS. The Dow was never intended to cover the entire economy.

A better market index is the market value of all stocks and bonds, now easer to do with computers.

Yep - almost to the day. Once they lost their CRONY in the White House, the party was over for them.

Has been for years.

You want Dow 30,000?

Give me a day or two and we'll have it.

Leftwing plot to artificially tank the Dow and blame it on President Trump?

It is not! DJI is a useless indicator. SP500 is better.

Are there Dow index futures? What is the max term?

Do they have Dow default credit swaps?

Wow. Last of the original Dow 30, and still a huge company, but the 29 others have been gone a while, in some cases, a long while.
