The White House said Friday that President Trump supports House legislation that closely tracks his priorities on border security and limiting legal immigration, walking back comments he made on national television rejecting the GOP bill.
The reversal came after hours of confusion on Capitol Hill, where Trumps words roiled an already fragile internal debate between conservative and moderate House Republicans who have been trying to find an immigration compromise after months of false starts.
The president fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill, White House spokesman Raj Shah said, referring to legislation drafted by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and a separate compromise measure.
Shah said Trump, during his Fox and Friends interview, was referring to an effort led by moderate House Republicans to force a series of immigration votes over the objections of the GOP leadership. Another senior White House official said Trump misunderstood the question that was posed to him, which prompted the president to say that he certainly wouldnt sign the more moderate one.
House Republican leaders had teed up action on two immigration measures: a hard-line draft written by Goodlatte and legislation billed as a compromise between the moderate and conservative factions of the GOP conference.
The draft compromise bill released Thursday was written with White House input, including from top Trump immigration adviser Stephen Miller, and closely hews to the four pillars the administration set out in a January framework.

The four pillars, or nothing. That means merit-based immigration. End to chain immigration. Cut legal immigration. E-Verify. No diversity lottery.
Yes...well congress never does anything BIG....unless they’re scalping the citizens where revenue is concerned.....
Gracias! As we may all be saying soon....
“Press 2 for English”
It limits visas for extended family members and shifts to a merit-based immigration system. The young Dreamers, who have been living in the United States illegally since childhood, could apply for legal status for six years. Applicants could gain points for education or other skills. Eventually, they could apply for citizenship.
The bill beefs up enforcement of immigration laws and ends the diversity visa lottery for immigrants from underrepresented countries, among other things.
I hope you’re right....
The wall is in it.
“...The young Dreamers, who have been living in the United States illegally since childhood, could apply for legal status for six years...”
Are they required to leave the country until then???
IT funds the Wall.....$25 billion for border wall>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then lets git ‘er done!
(1) Half the illegals in America arrived here legally - as students, as tourists, as temporary workers. They just stay after their visas expire.
(2) From 2008-2016, GOP Congressmen did absolutely nothing when Barack Obama stopped enforcing current immigration laws. Why should anyone believe that the GOP will enforce new immigration laws?
Well we will see but this is what I know currently so we shall see. Waiting on the conservatives and gop is always cloudy as they can’t seem to get their heads squared away sufficient to make things happen without shooting themselves in the foot!
You must not be very much aware of the laws being enforced already....
Let’s hope the Muzzies don’t crowd us back to Press 3.
It’s already going up....
Many of the 23 GOP signers hail from districts with large Hispanic populations when it comes to Daca so it’s easy to see why this is an issue.....they look primarily how they’ll be personally affected politically rather than what is actually good for the country.
“Little minds have difficulty seeing the big picture”....
Ain’t it the truth....
If we had stronger voter registration laws, they wouldn’t worry about them...
They shouldn’t anyway...They should do what is best for America and Americans...Like Trump...
Trump's four pillars do not include E-Verify.
They do not end Chain Migration - they limit it to spouses plus minor children.
And merit-based immigration?
That means merit-based skin color, merit-based non-Christian religion, merit-based gender identity, and merit-based fanatical Left Wing bias.
Its over .
Good Bye Midterms .
Good Bye Trump .
Amnesty is the deal breaker for the Base !
The narrative.
it takes 40 to build, patrol and maintain it
I hope TRUMP is not supporting that stupid Ryan Bill!!!
