Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart won the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., Tuesday night.
Stewart fought off an unexpectedly tough challenge from Virginia state lawmaker and former Green Beret Nick Freitas. E.W. Jackson, the 2013 Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, ran a distant third.
The contest highlighted regional and generational divides within the Republican primary electorate, as Stewart embraced President Trump, Virginia's Confederate heritage symbols, and a strong stance against illegal immigration. Freitas aligned himself with more libertarian Republicans nationally, including Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and pressed Stewart to distance himself from the "alt-right."

Same here. I showed up at my polling place after work (about 5:30). There was only one other person there besides me. Then again, I'm behind enemy lines here in Northern Virginia.
It doesnt matter. VA is deep blue now. Kaine wins re-election in a walk with strong support from NOVA and MS13 |
I just hope that Stewarts candidacy doesnt cost us VA-10.
Freitas was a sure loser. nobody would have bothered to work for him or to vote for him.
You think it’s as bad as that? Obviously you don’t want to nominate this guy (sorry FRiends this dude isn’t Trump he’s more like Moore) but I think Gunzturder is exaggerating with his “worst ever” stuff (that was Moore, actually). I honestly think he’ll do better than Gilmore did.
He praised this Nehlen twerp a year and half before Nehlen let the world know he was a Nazi? Big deal. Everyone has disavowed that jackhole.
Obviously I don’t think that Stewart is the worst GOP Senate candidate ever (for instance, Christine O’Donnell was a worse Senate candidate, and so was Todd Akin after he opened his yap; and how about that Schlesinger guy who was banned from the Foxwoods Casino for card-counting?), but I do think that Stewart’s shtick is polarizing and that, while it might help us with turnout in rural areas, voters in VA-10 disproportionately will be turned off by it. Congresswoman Barbara Comstock is a great candidate for that district, and she outperformed President Trump handily there in 2016 (had she not done so, she’d be a former congresswoman right now), but this time she’s facing a better known and better financed Democrat opponent than last time. The last thing that Comstock needs is depressed GOP turnout in Fairfax and Loudon Counties.
BTW, Stewart won the primary by only 5,000 votes or so, and it largely was on the strength of his performance in NoVA. I know that he’s an elected official in Prince William County, but I doubt that he was so popular with GOP primary voters in Alexandria and in Fairfax and Arlington Counties, and I strongly suspect that many Democrats in those liberal areas asked for the GOP ballot so as to give Kaine a weaker general-election opponent.
Oh...I do now....a little. I must have taken a few Quantum Leaps since last that was mentioned.

Too bad the ex-wife wasn’t Governor instead.
Yup. Carlson went full rabid Commie nutter. Big time Hillarybot. MN would’ve been better off keeping the Rudys in 1990: pro-life Gov. Perpich and reelecting Rudy Boschwitz.
O’Donnell accomplished what she needed to do: stopping the execrable RINO Mike Castle from getting the Senate nomination. Castle did more than any other “Republican” to destroy the party as a viable opposition in Delaware.
I believe she did have a chance to win, but the party establishment went insane because she took out their boy Castle and did everything they could to sandbag her, a la Palin.
NeverTrump Comstock will lose her seat all by herself.
You cannot blame her impending defeat on Stewart.
Comstock has lied to the voters since she was elected.
Looks like Barletta struggling in PA. Any thoughts?
After that “witch” nonsense, no she didn’t have a chance. A conservative could have won, if they were pristine and a strong candidate, which she was not and that’s on her not on anyone else.
I was an early backer here on FR, decent looking woman against an arch-RINO, of course I was. But to have it do over again I would have backed Castle.
Palin...fell out of love with her a long time ago, I’m glad she wasn’t given a post in the administration.
These polls I’ve seen out of PA are ridiculous, 20 point + leads for Wolf and Casey? C’mon.
I’m reading that Barletta is running a lousy race though.
Go Stewart!
The big issue is money. Alas, you can almost figure who will win a race based on that alone.
Barletta has less than $3 million. Casey, Jr. has $16.4 million. Barletta is going to have to drastically close that gap or Casey will merely “buy” his reelection.

I emphasized at the time why Castle needed to be defeated. Curiously, the establishment was going to allow for him to be anointed in the general election (Coons was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb). But it came with a cost. Castle was going to resign at some point early on and allow for Plugs Junior (then the state AG) to take the seat. Castle had no loyalty either to the GOP or to their base voters. One merely need look at the 1992 elections to see that he and Tom Carper merely agreed privately to swap offices.
No, Castle was a 100% weasel and scumbag. I believe he was a direct descendent of Ben Franklin’s treasonous son, and it showed.
Palin is still young enough she could make a comeback for office again.
Yeah, those polls don’t pass the smell test. Wolf has been a horrible Governor, and now that he’s been saddled with a psycho batshit crazy running mate, all the more he should be at or tied with Wagner. As for Barletta, he needs money to run a race. He simply is outgunned in that regard.
Meh. The fact the mainstream media destroyed Christine O'Donnell in 2010 didn't change the fact that Castle was an uber-RINO scumbag and needed to be taken out. O'Donnell had been the GOP nominee 2 years earlier in 2008, and nobody claimed she was a fringe candidate or a kook back then. The media just created that narrative out of thin air in 2010 to prevent an actual conservative from winning in Delaware due to it being an open seat. O'Donnell's a sweetheart I feel sorry for what happened to her.
The only election that comes to mind where I would have backed the "RINO establishment" candidate over the conservative challenger in hindsight (knowing what I know now), is Chris Cannon vs. that creep Jason Chaffetz. I believe replacing Cannon with Chaffetz actually turned out to be a downgrade -- the district went from a 96% lifetime conservative record to a 92% lifetime conservative record, or something like that. Chaffetz turned out to be just as bad as on amnesty as Cannon, the only difference is Cannon was at least honest that he was pro-illegal whereas Chaffetz lied about being a "principled" no-compromise-on-illegals candidate to get a cushy political career in Washington.
I agree with you on Palin though. She's been dead to me ever since she backed that faux "Independent" candidate for Alaska Governor that the RATs were openly supporting. Until she apologizes for that and makes amends, I have zero interest in supporting her in the future.
Thanks.
Coons needed to be taken out, he makes Carper look like the reasonable one in the state. As with Kirk I’ll take half a Republican any day of the week over a Leninist.
Biden was not at risk so O’Donnell was not scrutinized when she ran against him.
When the media goes after a candidate they need to be able to shake it off, like Trump.
I do feel bad for her though, I wonder what she’s up to. Never married.
