Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Wednesday he regretted endorsing failed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, adding he would be "open" to throwing his weight behind President Trump's 2020 re-election bid.
Im open to supporting the person who I think is best for my country and my state. If his policies are best, Ill be right there, Manchin told Politico Wednesday.
Im with him sometimes more than other Republican senators are with him, he continued later in the interview. A lot of the policies hes done [have] been good for the state.
Manchin recalled how Clinton asked him whether she could campaign in West Virginia in 2016 so she could explain her comments about wanting to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.
"I said, Thats a bad idea, you shouldnt come, Manchin remembered.
It was a mistake. It was a mistake politically, he said, referring to his support of Clinton.

He’ll lose.
Manchin is trying to play up his support of Trump but voters see right through it.
He wants to be re-elected and he’s desperate.
Part of Chuck-U’s problem is Red State Democrats have to defend their anti-Trump voting record.
Good luck with it.
Manchin is another goddamn sociopath megalomaniac, these guys prey on the stupid and have great success in getting re elected.
Frightening.
There he goes again. Joe is talkin conservative for the election. But if he gets back to Washington, he’ll support whatever or whoever the Dem Senate leaders tell him to support.
Really, Joe, ya think?????
I sat with a large group of people from the WV Panhandle during Trumps inauguration. They hated Manchin back then. He should have corrected sooner.
true
Time for him to go and get him a huntin’ license, a la effin Kerry. Maybe a photo-op of him shootin’ a gun? Oh, he did that already, you say?
What a liar. Just like McCain saying “build the dang wall.”
Is Manchin the French term for whore? Politically speaking of course.
I believe I read he is leading by 13 points to keep WV Democrat.
I think switching parties would be his best option. I don’t love the guy but his conservative credentials, phony as they are, are heads above Mitch McConnell’s.
After that statement, I wouldn’t be surprised if the DNC revoked his credentials.
Before the Depression, it was solidly Republican (like Western PA was).
WV hasn’t voted Democrat for President since 1996.
That poll was a ludicrous outlier that didn’t pass the smell test. Over 50% of the likely voter electorate polled wants Manchin out.
Sounds afraid.
Al Gore flipped Arkansas, Tennessee, and West Virginia permanently. They saved us from Manbearpig.
AZ district nonsense isn’t new. The AZGOP is traitorous. GOP legislatures have had Yuma with two military bases outvoted by Hispanic poverty districts on the other side of the state from Tucson for decades. Yuma has been represented in succession by radicals Mo Udall, Ed Pastor, and that nutball, Grijalva. It goes back to the Reagan years.
The GOP here doesn’t need the Democrats or Obama to slash their wrists. They do it willingly.
