McConnell cancels Senate's August recess
The Hill ^ | June 5, 2018 | Jordain Carney

Posted on 06/05/2018 10:43:46 AM PDT by jazusamo

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Tuesday that he will cancel the August recess, citing "historic obstruction" by Democrats.

“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled," McConnell said in a statement.

He added that senators would stay in session "to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees.”

The Senate had been expected to leave town on August 3 for a four-week break and not return to Washington until early September, after Labor Day.

But under McConnell's new plan, senators are expected to be out of town for the week of August 6. They will then return to Washington and remain in session for the rest of the month.

Here is McConnell's full statement.

“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled. Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees.”

In persuasiveness terms:

  McConnell’s heat = .5
  The DC weather’s August heat = 50

Time to fold like the cheap suits you are, Dems! Approve those judges and President Trump’s wished-for legislation! Then, when you get your recess, Trump’ll still have time for some appointments!

"Got to give credit when it is due. Thank you McConnell."

Agreed. The smartest thing that any member of Congress can do is to support President Trump.

These people know a majority of Americans aren’t down with what the far left envisions for America. Yet, it is even money we are looking at a Elizabeth Warren or Kamala Harris candidacy. Those two are as Leftist as they get, so why will the Dems waste the time and money on another failed election? They are counting on the illegal vote augmented by leftist media barrage..

What makes it good news is that it takes a number of vulnerable Dems off the campaign trail during the later summer. They gotta stay in Washington while many of their GOP opponents can keep campaigning.

Well this should be fun. Any recourse if they leave anyway?

If the 'Rats go on vacay, Turtleface can still hold confirmation votes on judicial (etc) appointees ... Send him another bottle of bourbon. Maybe he'll find some courage in it.

So does this (did McConnell) eliminate possible recess appointments?

pretty sure he cancelled it to prevent recess appointments. This was not done to help our POTUS.

I’m not so sure it’s good news.
He may have done it to block Trump from making recess appointments.

“He added that senators would stay in session “to pass legislation, including appropriations bills..”

So they’ll stay in town so they can spend more money and further restrict our rights. I greatly prefer our Congress and Senate when they are NOT in session.

Mitch is a political animal. This hurts the democrats the most because they won’t be able to campaign and the incumbents need to do so. This is about politics first and nominees second, but I’m OK with that.

Ignorant comment. It is because the Democrat senators want to campaign and the ones up for reelection in the red states are vulnerable. This keeps them in Washington and off the campaign trail. This has been done before and will be done again. The nominees and appropriation bills give him a great cover, but this is about politics first and the dems know it.

Yes, of course. The remainder of congress will get more work done (as long as there is a quorum present) with the obstructionists absnt.
