~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Edwards Air Force Base, California

Edwards Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located on the border of Kern County and Los Angeles County, California in the Antelope Valley. Edwards is home to the 412th Test Wing.

The base is strategically situated next to Rogers Dry Lake, a desert salt pan; its hard playa surface provides a natural extension to Edwards' runways. This large landing area, combined with excellent year-round weather, makes the base a perfect site for flight testing. The lake is a National Historic Landmark.

Designated as the Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards is home to the United States Air Force Test Pilot School and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center. Almost every United States military aircraft since the 1950s has been at least partially tested at Edwards, and it has been the site of many aviation breakthroughs as a result.

The Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., is the Air Force Materiel Command center of excellence for research, development, and test and evaluation of aerospace systems for the United States and its allies.

It also operates the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and supports non-military government agencies. The combat, combat support and training capabilities of most of the Air Force's weapons systems were first proven here, giving the AFFTC a direct link to each of the Air Force's core competencies.

The most recent projects at Edwards are the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F-22 Raptor, RQ-4 Global Hawk, YAL-1 Airborne Laser and B-52 synthetic fuel program. In addition, the C-17 Globemaster III flight test program is another major project at Edwards AFB. As well, the Department of Defense's massive development on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has seen significant testing of prototypes at Edwards.

Learn More About Edwards Air Force Base HERE!

The Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) Museum is an Air Force Field Museum operating within the guidelines of the USAF Heritage Program. Its mission is to collect, interpret, preserve, and display the material history of the AFFTC, Edwards Air Force Base and its antecedents, and the history of USAF flight testing.

There are currently over 80 aircraft in the museum's collection, with 40 on display (36 at Edwards and four at the AFFTC-managed Blackbird Airpark in Palmdale) and the remainder in storage or restoration. Other artifacts in the collection include aircraft propulsion systems, missiles, hardware, life support equipment, technical drawings, test reports, personal memorabilia, photographs, and wind tunnel models.

If our trip to AZ was any example,
it's gonna take a lot of packing
.... to go to Edwards AFB in CA! :)
Thanks, Galz, for a fun road trip!

A good rule-of-thumb for travelling:

Take half the clothes you think you need.

Take twice the money you think you need.

;-)

You got that right! I’ve learned to pack all I need in one bag, plus a carry on for my makeup and laptop. The important stuff. LOL! My years in the clothing business taught me how to use my wardrobe well, as in mix’n’match.

Thank you for this. I grew up on Edwards during the mid to late 70's. It was a very isolated place, but wonderful once you got used to it. Dick Scobee of the Challenger was a test pilot there, and Buzz Aldrin was the commander for a couple of years. The B-1 had its start there, was cancelled by Carter, then reactivated by Reaganus Maximus. This led to continued testing and development. NASA also tested different engine types....usually at around 8 on Saturday mornings. Seriously. The windows shook with the sounds of sonic booms on an almost daily basis, and it was just something you got used to. The high school on the base has made state rankings almost yearly, and once it had the highest percentage of graduates going to the service academies of any high school in the nation. 'The Right Stuff' doesn't even begin to define the caliber of the people there, officers, enlisted, or dependents.

Aw, man! I was hoping that they had hired some more for your team so you could slow down a bit!

Did you ever get any rain? We got a bit last night, but we’re soooo far in the hole, it will take a lot to catch up!

We did get a new person, but we also picked up a new company to do their payroll. And we found out it isn’t our boss getting new companies, it’s the bigger boss. But he has no concept of what it takes.....just that it gets done, and why do we need overtime. I am not pleased with management.

A Saturday downpour of about 15 minutes. Glad you got at least a little rain.

Oh, brother! Upper management sux!

I have always thought that they need to spend time “on the line” as it were to see what havoc they cause when they just willy-nilly make decisions without considering what it takes to get things actually done! *spit*

Greetings to all at the Canteen!

To all our military men and women, past and present,

THANK YOU
for your service!

Been out at the garage giving Baby its long-overdue Spring Cleaning. Haven't done the first car show this year and it's time to have the car ready to go.

My dad went out to Edwards several times during his years working as an aeronautical engineer at Arnold AFB here in TN. I don't know much about the things he worked on because he wasn't allowed to discuss it - - top secret stuff and all.
But I do have a photo taken of him giving a lecture at Edwards and in the group was Neil Armstrong. Dad loved that photo because he was so thrilled to meet Neil. Some of the work he did helped put man in space and on the moon, so meeting Neil was a big deal to him.
