.S. President Donald Trump on Friday directed Energy Secretary Rick Perry to take emergency steps to keep at-risk coal and nuclear plants running, the White House announced.
Under the directive, Perry would require grid operators to buy electricity from ailing nuclear and coal-fired power plants to keep them from being shuttered.
Unfortunately, impending retirements of fuel-secure power facilities are leading to a rapid depletion of a critical part of our nations energy mix, and impacting the resilience of our power grid, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

“I was thinking more along the lines of central planning...Trump needs to be careful with this sort of thing. Maybe OK in this case but I would not like to see him rescuing businesses that really should be allowed to fail.”
More likely Trump is re-leveling the playing field after Obama INTENTIONALLY un-leveled it, so as to achieve the goal of having those plants shut down, but still have cover to blame the shutdowns on market forces.
I wouldn’t worry too much and I like the idea of not running out of power, and/or being so dependent on natural gas.
“Our domestic energy resources are already well developed. Electric utilities own almost 3200 electrical generating plants in this country. Coal and nuclear make up 260 of those. Around 2100 are fueled by natural gas, hydro-electric, renewable energy, or other domestic energy sources. “
That’s DECEPTIVE. Coal and ESPECIALLY nuclear plants are much larger than natural gas plants, and they make up 50 PERCENT of our power generation today. It would not be very smart to simply trash them, as Obama was trying to do.

The Russia funded watermellon groups—green on the outside, red on the in—will go bonkers. Sierra club included.
Oh. It’s you. Our designated never-Trumper, spreading deep concern.
LOL
And do away with those awful windmill and solar farms!
These businesses were only in trouble because Obama tried to kill them by imposing all sorts of restrictions on them. It was ridiculous and it really would have hurt us had they been allowed to go under. Fortunately President Trump got in office just in time to undo a lot of the damage Obama did before it was too late.
Hardly. There is tremendous demand for coal internationally and we just so happen to have the largest coal reserves in the world by far. This could and should be a valuable export.
When is he going to order full-scale deportations? Illegals are STILL stealing jobs from my family.
Really good points: thank you.
What does that have to do with U.S. coal plants?
The one. The only.
You said the industry was dying. It isn’t. As for Coal fired plants, its fine to shut them down once we have viable alternatives in place. We don’t yet. Obama was acting out of a political vendetta rather than out of any practical sense.
Natural gas.
What part of the energy industry is not regulated? The number of bathroom breaks allowed employees?
Plentiful energy is important to keep growing an economy. This is sound policy, unlike the policy of our previous administration of standing on our air hose.
Crony capitalism/SOCIALISM.
Oh, but it’s OUR socialist, so that makes it OK.
The Left is the reason the power plants have gone down hill. The Dept. of Energy, run of, by and for leftards, permits older plants to comply with old regs, “grandfather”ing. But if they try making major capital improvements, they must get the entire plant completely up to the current, more onerous code, or it will be shut down. As a consequence, power plants do not make capital improvements. They just muddle through with antiquated machinery and methods.
Often the case in a worker’s paradise...
I guess we shouldn’t expect more out of them. They are rather limited in their ability to think clearly.
Of course, that’s using our set of goals. For their’s it’s completely rational.
It’s why we don’t support them.
If Trump decides to remove that regulation, it’ll be a short, cool summer.
