Parents face charge after giving teen marijuana to treat alleged seizures

A Georgia family has been torn apart after authorities placed a 15-year-old teen in a group home following a tip from his therapist that his parents gave him marijuana in an effort to control his seizures.

David Brill, whose parents Suzeanna and Matthew spent six days in jail after their arrest, allegedly suffers from near-constant seizures.

The couple maintains that marijuana kept him seizure-free for 71 days, until Twiggs County sheriff’s deputies knocked on their door and told them to stop. The couple said they obliged, only for Brill’s seizures to return just hours later.

“Within 14 hours of complying we were rushing our son to the hospital,” Suzeanna Brill told The New York Times. “And it was one of the most horrific seizures I’ve ever seen.”

In April, Brill was taken into custody by the state Department of Family and Children Services following an order from a juvenile court judge. He has been separated from his service dog, and is only allowed to communicate with his parents through phone calls and short visits, 13WMAZ.com reported.

In early May, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a bill that adds PTSD and intractable pain to a list of medical conditions that are eligible to be treated with cannabis oil. Late-stage cancer patients and those suffering from seizure disorders are also eligible to seek cannabis oil treatment, but state law still bans growing, buying or transporting marijuana.

They cared so much they didn’t bother to go to a doc and get an Rx. They just decided to play doctor themselves. Too bad

I only have one problem with the supposed law, see the Volstaed Act and explain why it required a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT .

“Georgia’s law allows for prescription of oils”

The Governor just signed that law the first week of May, THIS YEAR.

I guess that means he’ll pardon these parents and let the kid get what he needs.

“Be as libertarian as you wish

Explain in court”

Or, eradicate the simple Pot Drug Warriors from the political landscape. Putting them in the same political space as segregationists and prohibitionists.

Frankly, I believe that the best solution.

And it is as inevitable as it is imminent.

And do you advocate the same for other illegal drugs?

No.

I think most illegal drugs are poison.

As are many of the legal drugs, like Benzodiazepines, Opioids and SSRIs. And alcohol.

Of particular note, Methamphetamine has the potential to destroy entire civilizations. As do opiates.

I don’t do pot or any of the above. Mostly because I’m weak and if you get me to drinkin’ bad things happen. Everything seems to lead up to Whiskey for me.

But I’ve done ‘em all.

An ass finally showed up at 32. Hopefully he will someday receive the same level of fairness he so fervently wishes on others.

Naw, he drinks too much for me.

I avoid any association with drinkers. It’s not good for our health.

They cared so much they didn’t bother to go to a doc and get an Rx.

So. What. So possessing a "magic" piece of paper from a doctor indemnifies you, and not possessing it subjects you to a potential long prison term?

For either one of God's plants that grows out of the ground, or any "medicine" on Earth, that's ludicrous. It is tantamount to de facto unlimited government power. And that can never be legitimate if one believes in minimal government.

On the other hand, if one believes in Big Government and the Nanny State—when it suits one of their particular "righteous causes"—then sure, crushing decent, totally non-criminal individuals under such bureaucratic legal auspices—individuals with zero criminal or malicious intent whatsoever, and who should be presumed, in general, to know what's best for their children moreso than any government agency ever will—is just fine and dandy...

Don’t want to be arrested? Don’t break the law

Don’t want to be arrested? Don’t break the law.

Every American—including you—breaks dozens of laws ever single day—laws which can get you prison time if you are convicted for violating them.

So don't be so ridiculously naive. The overbearing State can scoop up any one of us as a "criminal" any time they want. The fact that they don't doesn't mean they can't—it just means that they haven't gone to the trouble yet, or identified a good reason for wanting to.

For example—by your dogma—many millions of gun owners in states with semi-auto and high-capacity magazine bans are breaking the law—law which has already been upheld by state and federal Supreme Courts as Constitutional. Apparently your "don't break the law" solution if for them to turn in all those guns and gear.

After all: "Don’t want to be arrested? Don’t break the law." squawks the dogmatic Parrot of Authoritarianism.

So you might want to rethink your flippant Statist statement...
