Teachers' unions are changing their tactics to maintain 'political clout' and salvage potential losses...Their new message? Anyone can join the union.
A new membership category called Community Allies, open to any person who demonstrates support in advancing the cause of public education.
It is of dubious legality, as unions are created to represent employees in a certain field, not to wield political influence.
Yet, if this plan succeeds, the National Educators Association will be able to solicit these new members for PAC donations, a fact that could extend their political reach even further beyond where it is now.
The National Educators Association plans to slash its budget in September by $50 million in anticipation of the reduction in numbers that could result from this decision.
The Supreme Court case that has union leaders worried is Janus v. AFSCME, which challenged the right of government unions to charge employees even when they disagree with the unions positions. A similar case, Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, resulted in a 4-4 split at the Supreme Court in 2016.

“Send us money. We’ll take it.”
It’s all about raising funds for political action against Conservatives.
Teacher’s unions propose new rule,
all children are now non-voting union members
and must pay union dues.
Will the “community members” pay nearly $1000.00/year in dues—like the extortion extracted from educators?
Unions are only about the cash flow...ever...Looks like they aren’t particular where it comes from as long as you uphold those at the top of their food chain and their political favorites.
This is the epitome of corruption, greed, and illegality of libtards. That union does next to nothing for its members. Its true purpose seems to be enriching the people who work for the union.
+1
With a certainty that is true! I was acquainted with a Union Organizer thru my work for a time. If members knew how the Union Leaders not only see the members but speak about them in private they’d never join or give them a single cent whatsoever.
“Its true purpose seems to be enriching the people who work for the union.”
That’s what happens when you let mob rule represent you in the workforce.
You get anywhere from nothing to crumbs, and the head honchos of the union get ridiculous payouts. It’s like a perpetual class action lawsuit that requires resolution every few years.
“It’s all for the children!”
Rinse. Repeat.
precious little representation of members!
but
a steady river of commie-pinko-leftist political propaganda in their “union newspaper”
... needs to be investigated....seriously... on BOTH accounts!
Two Words: Randi Weingarten! A Capo to head the NEA.
If I join the Union, would I receive the same benefits teachers get?
In the wife’s Midwest Inner-City School District, only aroundm9% of teachers are Union Members, a few years after”Right-to-work” came into effect. Given the choice, most do not see the benefit of paying the Union anymore.
This has tremendously affected financing for local Democrat Campaigns.
Too Damn bad.
In some areas the bus drivers are part of the teachers’ union ... pension and all ...
Soon they will be “Draining the swamp”..
Exactly. The enabling legislation I think requires the members to share employers and/or job descriptions in common. Similar to credit unions.
If I join, can I get health benefits other than through obamacare?
