Valerie Ervin threatens to sue after Maryland election board declines to print new ballots

Rather than print new ballots before next month’s primary, Maryland elections officials decided Thursday to notify Democratic voters that former candidate Kevin Kamenetz has died and that a vote for him will be counted as vote for Valerie Ervin, his former running mate.

The state Board of Elections has said that it could not print new ballots to reflect Ervin’s last-minute gubernatorial candidacy largely because a single paper mill makes the only paper that Maryland’s voting machines can read.

**SNIP**

Ervin decided to run after Kamenetz died suddenly May 10.

“Our focus is how do we educate the voters about this change?” Charlson said. “We can do that.”

I'm not so sure about all that...

It’s understandable that they wouldn’t be prepared for this since no one in the entire history of the world has ever died before.

It is the way of things. Kamenetz died 7 weeks prior to the primary date, less than six weeks prior to early voting. The qualification period has long since ended and ballots were printed. I would not expect the BOE to give a candidate in my party such special treatment. She just needs to educate her voters - voters who may or may not want her in the top slot.

If the Board runs advertising announcing this candidate’s position on the ballot, it will be clearly construed as support for a particular and specific individual. How can that be legal?

Yeah well - maybe we should cut the early voting nonsense.
Then there would be enough time to get the ballot modifications completed.

A vote for one person is a vote for another?????? What if the person voting for the dead guy was making a statement? A statement like “the only one of these candidates worthy of the job is the dead guy”,perhaps.

Agreed. Put in place to help people who are sick and cannot leave bed, and military personnel.

Now, it is a convenience for lazy people.

I presume in the past if you asked for one, they would look you over and say “You don’t look disabled or active duty to me. What’s going on?”

Now: “There is a sale a Macys that could go down any day without notice! I must be prepared!”

She is a Democrat. She is of the party of early voting and all of its benefits and drawbacks. SHE OWNS THIS OUTCOME!

How can that be legal?

It's a political party primary election!

What does "legal" have to do with it?

Why not just put a picture of jackass and a picture of an elephant?

The voters can scribble a circle around which party they want to have select their masters.

...said adding a new candidate’s name to ballots after they’ve already been printed is not a simple task.

Tough shitsky. Ballots should not be printed until the deadline passes to file for an elective office.

The Democrats in Missouri elected a dead man as Governor once upon a time. This is the way they do business.
