SCTV Reunion for Show that Would Now Face PC Problems

Uzbeks!

If you are a fan of perhaps the best comedy show on television, SCTV, you probably already have a smile on your face. Uzbeks were part of the hilarious SCTV universe from Canada that would be considered taboo today in our overly PC culture because they were parodied as being a drunken, shiftless people. Back when SCTV was broadcast during the years 1976 to 1984 the references to Uzbeks caused not a whiff of protest which says something about how times have changed.

David Menzies of Rebel Media in Canada explains why SCTV was so popular and, sadly, why many of today's SJW snowflakes would be incapable of tolerating it.

Mrs. Fablo;s Tiny Town - visiting a prison (discussing the sentences of the inmates in a maximum security prison)

Mrs. Falbo: ohh and Mohammed, what about you?

Inmate: MANSLAUGHTER!

Mrs. Fablo: Well if we had learned to just put in our old friend Mr. Apostrophe, we would have had...

Mr. Messenger: MAN’S LAUGHTER, Mrs. Falbo

Mrs. Falbo: That’s right, MAN’S LAUGHTER

That was one of their best episodes with Hey, Georgy: “How will I know what is wrong? Oh, no! Uzbeks drunk my battery fluid! Thanks, Georgy!” or What Fits Into Russia: “Look at rest of world! Is almost gone!” Sheer genius.....

The greatest tv show of the 70-80s. Always made SNL fade into oblivion. I remember when I was young and single, coming home from an evening out and watching it after the final credits of SNL.

The Uzbeks are a Turkic ethnic group; the largest Turkic ethnic group in Central Asia. They comprise the majority population of Uzbekistan but are also found as a minority group in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia and China. Uzbek diaspora communities also exist in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.

Where have all you guys been when I’ve lamented the end of Show Business smarts on FR?

Now I find out there are actual freepers who not only remember Guy Caballero but remember his un-pc attempts at sympathy.

Remember when he was dropped from his wheelchair from the ceiling during the SCTV Awards?

“Uzbeks! Don’t give them money or matches.”

“Uzbeks! The weak link in the chain of socialism.”

Now...I was deployed to Uzbekistan in 2003-04. More Uzbeks working on our base during daylight than Americans. They seemed OK; secular when it came to Islam, liked their vodka, and the women dressed as they pleased especially when it was 110 F. out. Many spoke English but learn some Russian & you could talk to all of them. Uzbeks I met seemed to like Americans.

I also learned that many Russians regard Uzbeks as subhuman. But two Uzbek schoolteachers who taught a Russian night class later became Christians while I was there.

Imagine trying to make Blazing Saddles today! Or Mel Brooks’ Hitler Rap. Or Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.

Lucky for me, I was introduced to the joys of satire when I was in High School in the 70’s in a Satire in Literature class. Sadly, satire is now dead.

Too bad today’s culture doesn’t realize what a powerful weapon satire is.

SCTV was forced to operate on a notoriously stingy budget, which is why you see them doing a lot of cheap “neighbourhood shots” around Edmonton, which is where it was mostly filmed in its prime (1980-83).

HOWEVER, they did have one asset - access to a massive wardrobe library. So with no money for special effects but lots of costumes available, the cast was forced to be creative and create characters out of nothing ... obviously it worked
