'You need to speak English': Encounters in viral videos show Spanish is still polarizing in the U.S.

Natalia Meneses was shopping at a Walmart in Georgia this year when her 3-year-old daughter began a conversation that triggered an ugly experience.

The little girl did not blurt out a profanity or otherwise say anything inappropriate. She simply pointed out flower hair clips to her mother: "Mira, Mami!"

Overhearing the conversation that ensued in Spanish between mother and child, a woman snapped at Meneses, an American citizen who was born in Colombia.

"You need to teach this kid to speak English, because this is America and kids need to learn English," she said. "If not, you need to get out of this country."

You are totally correct.

It is RUDE to a) speak another language or b) whisper in front of others in public space.

Both may mean the speakers are speaking about another person, or perhaps plotting something; anything nefarious.

It is not about “eavesdropping”, as the strawman argument goes. We hear stuff all the time that we simply cannot help hearing. Therefore, at least let it be something that is not directed at us personally or generally threatening. Using whispers and other languages implies the speaker is trying to hide something.

I grew up in Texas in the early 90s. I remember one, maybe two Mexican students at the most that did not speak English, which was not uncommon for us that grew up in the Southwest.

Now, the ESL departments from sea to shining sea are just as well-funded as the English departments. We are under invasion and our language is being attacked. It is ironic that the Mexicans and Central Americans are destroying our native language just as Cortez and the Spaniards did to them.

This is America, we speak ENGLISH. If you want to live in America learn and speak ENGLISH.

If you refuse to assimilate and learn to speak ENGLISH; if you insist on speaking Spanish, then go home and stay in Mexico, South America, or Spain!

That happens to me all of the time. I think to myself: “I’ll swing by the 7-11 and grab a gatorade on the way to the gym.” Only to stand in line while half a dozen “cultural enrichment agents” buy $20 of junk food a piece.

so did my grandparents, so what? The person who said this in the opine was wrong and should have been admonished by the mother.

Virginia had virtually no Spanish speaking people until the GWB administration, now we are overrun with them.

Oh I know. I lived in the Tidewater area from 2002-2008. The transformation was staggering.

People from Texas had long known that GWB had a strange obsession with Mexico. We used to call him the Governor of Mexico. Sadly, the nation at large did not see how big of a fraud he was until it was too late.

But to be fair, GWB was just taking advantage of what Ann Richards set up for him. Other than Janet Reno, I can think of no other female politician in America that was as evil and hateful than Richards.

Those Spanish speakers feel they are entitled for everyone to understand them in a country where the majority speaks English. You weren’t rude at all, just truthful.

The plan to turn the USA into North Mexico started with GHW Bush and has been bipartisan.
Each successor reduced enforcement until the Kenyanesian Usurper went all the way and started flying them in from their home countries.

The person who said this in the opine was wrong

Correct.

Instead, she should have asked her if she was an illegal alien, and started dialing up ICE on her Smartphone.

“More relevant is the situation in schools where when Spanish is spoken in the hallways & there is a high level of violence I personally have had family get nervous and be in a perpetual state of Anxiety “are the talking about jumping me”?”

That is understandable and students should not have an expectation of privacy in such situations. In fact I would support a teacher there requiring English to be spoken in the public areas of the school. The same would hold true for English speaking students making gang signs.

If the animated conversation of others leaves you wondering if they are simply loud or needing assistance it should be easy enough to look at non-verbal cues. They may be speaking Spanish because they want to be isolated. They should be careful though of accentuating barriers when it would be better for those barriers to come down.

Oh I agree, heaven forbid you should get a doctor educated at the Sorbonne. But I was speaking of doctors and other professionals who speak more than one language proficiently.

I wouldn’t care even if it the spanish speaker thought I was rude. I was in high school in the mid to late 90’s, and I never took a language class(Spanish & German were both offered), and the reason I never took a language class is because this is the USA, and we speak English here. I’m not about to learn another language to suit some illegal alien who snuck over the border.

Why would they be speaking about a complete stranger? And if they were why would the words of complete strangers matter one fig to me? Unless there was suspicious behavior involved.

Does that happen a lot to you?

You’re entitled to your position, and I agree that we should not be forced to learn another language to suit illegals.

However, picking up a second language is a good thing. Before colleges became watered down, Latin was a requirement to graduate.

They have sharp scissors and razors. They can speak whatever language they like. Seriously if the level of conversation is becoming so loud that you are being talked over it would be polite for one of them to say “Please excuse us we’re just talking up the new Star Wars we don’t mean to be rude” for example. The apology more for disturbing you and not for speaking Italian.

No it is not rude to speak another language in public in a private conversation. And where did you ever learn that whispering in public was rude? I’ll ask again why would the private conversations of complete strangers who are not acting in any suspicious manner be your business making it necessary for you to hear and understand it?

How do you feel about thought crimes?

I once had a co-worker whose granddaughter came to see her at work. They both spoke English and Spanish. They had been speaking English then the girl started getting antsy and my coworker switched to Spanish for a couple of minutes. Afterwards I said, “You were telling her she better sit down and behave or she was going to get a swat.” My co-worker said “I didn’t know you spoke Spanish.” I told her, “I don’t but I recognize that tone and expression in any language.”
