'You need to speak English': Encounters in viral videos show Spanish is still polarizing in the U.S.

Natalia Meneses was shopping at a Walmart in Georgia this year when her 3-year-old daughter began a conversation that triggered an ugly experience.

The little girl did not blurt out a profanity or otherwise say anything inappropriate. She simply pointed out flower hair clips to her mother: "Mira, Mami!"

Overhearing the conversation that ensued in Spanish between mother and child, a woman snapped at Meneses, an American citizen who was born in Colombia.

"You need to teach this kid to speak English, because this is America and kids need to learn English," she said. "If not, you need to get out of this country."

Fine speak Spanish all day and all night for all I care. Just don't make us taxpayers pay for bilingual schools, Spanish ballots, every state document in Spanish, driver's license exams in Spanish, push 1 for English,Spanish translators at government meetings, other than that I don't give a damn.

Some needed to be bitch slapped.

I’ve had at least two people come-up to me while I’m working, and start speaking spanish to me. I just calmly tell them “I don’t speak spanish.” They just walk away mad.

Liberals like multiculturalism by design. Its not a defect, its a feature.

It keeps America divided and maximizes their power as they play off people against each other.

For them America is the obstacle, not a source of pride.

If she’s growing up from that age in the US, she’ll speak English just fine.

I’d say the lady from Columbia knows the value of teaching her child to use English.

Oh please. Many jobs won’t hire you if you’re not bilingual.

Tourists and lost persons can get by with “no inglis” but a person who is working in a store or service function and pulls that crap on me gets a “GTFO.”

I don’t see the real need for a future hotel maid or fruit packer to need to speak english.

My daughter teaches kindergarten in a heavily Hispanic area. She teaches one Spanish/ Engish word a day. Her students tell their parents that their teacher speaks Spanish. Imagine their surprise when they try to speak to her in her very limited Spanish knowledge.

I went to school in TX in the 1960’s. We had some kids in class who barely spoke English, and they, they’re parents and grandparents had been born in TX. Most of the Mexican kids who spoke English, did so with a heavy Mexican accent. In grade school Mexicans made up about 25 to 30 percent of the school, but by time graduation rolled around, they made up only about 5 percent, most of them dropped out as soon as they reached 16.

In the common space it is rude to speak so that others cannot understand unless you are truly a foreign visitor who is uncomfortable in English & have no choice.

People like the women in the source article are so focused on “me” that they ignore courtesy.

It is OUR country.
English is OUR language.
Until the 1980’s there were many places in the USA where there were few Spanish speaking people.
We did not invite all of these Spanish speaking people here, the Uniparty weasels did by not enforcing our laws and borders.

Bush League Republicans need to become extinct politically.

English is THE language of the USA and the earlier LEGAL immigrants knew it well. Yes the adults, usually living among fellow countrymen from Europe continued to speak their own native tongue. HOWEVER, they and the “old fashioned” public school system knew well that the mastery of ENGLISH was the key to success in their new country.
At school and in my neighborhood children WERE NOT ALLOWED to speak to each other in the old language. Children speaking (whatever) were admonished by adults, “ENGLISH, speak ENGLISH, you are AMERICANS!!” At home, (whatever) was spoken to older family members, but in school ENGLISH was the only tongue heard.
My own father, brought here at age 6 was enrolled in a school whose SOLE requirement for entry to the first grade was a TOTAL inability or knowledge of English. The study was 100% imemersion in English and the used of anything else meant an after-school detention...no excuses allowed.
That was the generation adn school system that brought forth the generation known as the “GREATEST” and who saved the world twice from tyrannical despots.
This country is now on the down slope, but phrased in “good intentions”.

I have no problems with legal immigrant parents speaking Spanish to their children. Just teach the children English before they start school. Being bilingual is a plus.

My problem is immigrant parents wanting the US to adjust our lives to their preference. Again, it is a preference that they make to not learn English. The only exception I can imagine is an senior citizen who moves with their younger children, or a mentally handicapped individual, then the other family members would need to interpret for them.

If I were to move to another country to live, I can’t imagine demanding that the people of the other country learn English, and accommodate my preference not to learn their language.

Can you imagine an English immigrant to Mexico or another southern neighbor demanding that the country accommodate them by printing everything in English, or giving their children special language classes.

At her age by the time she is job ready that not be true anymore, and if that is the case don’t expect any accommodations for those unlucky enough to speak English as their primary language. But I agree with the first post. I don’t care what language people speak amongst themselves. I grew up in a community where German was still often spoken around the dinner table. But don’t expect the world to change to accommodate you. All government documents and school materials should be in English period.

In the early 90s I worked in education field in West Texas. The Hispanic administrator with her doctorate degree had a child entering elementary. I noticed the kid only spoke Spanish. I simply asked why they didn’t know any English and she snapped at me and said, “that’s your job to teach him.”

Thanks to all the taxpayer funds going to La Raza, Hispanics depend on funds for interpreters, bilingual print media and affirmative action. Every other country in the world immigrating to USA goes through a short semester of English prep and then they are on their own. You can also thank the Bush regime for New World Blending of the Americas.
