Following the most recent school mass shooting – this time in Santa Fe, Texas, where 10 students and teachers were killed and 10 were wounded Friday – family members, friends and investigators find themselves searching for illusive answers.
Why did this happen? How do you make sense of such a senseless tragedy?
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pointed out that unlike other recent mass shootings, “there were not those types of warning signs. The red-flag warnings were either nonexistent or very imperceptible.”
The accused shooter’s parents said the media reports of the shooting seemed “incompatible with the boy (they) love,” and the 17-year-old boy’s best friend said he was “one of the most responsible people I knew. He didn't drink or do drugs, to my knowledge … he was academically proactive, making all A's.”
Given the profile that is emerging, investigators have not yet identified the motive for the shooting.
I, however, know precisely why this latest killer did what he did. And I also know what will motivate the next killer to act in a similar way.
Many years ago, as I began investigating high-profile murders in Los Angeles County, I carefully chronicled the motives for every homicide that occurred in our region. You might think there are a million reasons why someone would commit a murder, but there are only three possibilities.
At least one of these three motives is the driving force behind every homicide, theft, burglary and robbery. In fact, these three motives lie at the heart of every conceivable crime or misdeed.
Human misbehavior is motivated by: financial greed, sexual – or relational – lust, and the pursuit of power.

When I hear that whistle blowin’, I hang my head and cry.
Agreed that it happens from being messed up on booze/drugs, but can probably be separated from “reason”.....
I remember that and I also remember being very angered by the whole thing, I refused to play along. Among my classmates in the room supposedly on that plane, I chose not based upon purported utility to the group but the one who looked most likely to be tasty, tender and lightly marbled. The teacher was flabbergasted and not happy but the class laughed, and several of the girls blurted out "ooh, eat me too, I'm tender." Made a big joke out of it. This was in the 80's.

Writer forgets RAPE is about POWER over the victim not LUST. And left out the ADD/ADHD/PANIC/ANXIETY drugs that are BLACK BOXED FOR SUICIDE which can easily be HOMICIDAL as well.

J. Warner Wallace doesn't get it... We've had 'financial greed, sexual lust, and the pursuit of power since the dawn of time... and certainly since the beginning of our country.
What we didn't have was mass shootings - until very recently. Because while evil has always existed, Western cultural systems for dealing with evil also existed. Think of it as 'institutional knowledge' - institutional knowledge that's been washed away. And the signposts have been washed away with it...
We have replaced 'something' with 'nothing'... The 'Morning Joe' contribution to the horror we're creating.
Might the drugs you mention be the ADHD,etc. drugs like Ritalin ?
Not really. It is more the anti-depressants and anti-psychotics that tend to trigger stuff.
Ritalin can be a gateway drug when kids snort it, but the kids who are shooting up the schools are not "just hyper."
I must explain that it requires a perfect mixture in order to work. For example, a home environment which is not strong and secure, and a very suggestible individual, and a teaching environment that does not focus on "good" character formation. Drugs are like the rotten frosting on the cake.
The kind of education I am talking about teaches children the benefits of being a psychopath as something worth choosing.
This thing is so difficult to explain to people precisely because it is so hidden - by design.
When I first discovered it I tried to explain it, to warn other parents, but it was very hard.
All I could do was make sure my kids were not affected by any of it.
This is the heart of the Mystery of Iniquity and Satan's plan being shoved down the throats of our children.
That is what I think every time I hear about another school shooting.
