This morning Ed reported that President Trump had canceled his planned summit with Kim Jong-Un. This afternoon, Trump called the cancelation a “tremendous setback for North Korea” and for the world. But as Allahpundit noted, Trump also left the door open a crack saying, “If and when Kim Jong-un chooses to engage in constructive dialogue and actions, I am waiting.” It turns out Trump didn’t have to wait long. From Bloomberg:
In a statement Friday by state-run KCNA that cited Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan, North Korea vowed to continue to pursue peace and signaled it would give Washington more time to reconsider talks.
Our goal and will to do everything for peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and mankind remains unchanged, and we are always willing to give time and opportunity to the US side with a big and open mind, according to the statement. We express our intent that there is a willingness to sit at any time, in any way to resolve issues.
So is there a chance the June 12 meeting could be back on? Not likely according to Bloomberg’s source:
A senior administration official later downplayed the idea that the meeting could be put back on track for June 12. The North Koreans, the official said, have recently stopped cooperating on preparations for the summit. For example, U.S. officials traveled to Singapore last week expecting to meet with North Korean counterparts, but the North Koreans never showed up.
They stood us up, the official said at a briefing for reporters conducted on condition of anonymity.
The NY Times story on the cancelation points out that President Trump believes North Korea blew up the meeting on orders from President Xi of China:
Mr. Trump has said he believes North Koreas tone changed after Mr. Kim met President Xi Jinping in the coastal Chinese city of Dalian in early May. Mr. Trump suggested that Mr. Xi might be using Chinas influence over North Korea as leverage in trade negotiations with the United States.
I think Xi told Kim to slow down, said Joseph Y. Yun, who was until recently the State Departments senior diplomat on North Korea. Also, I think Kim was getting pushback from his own folks, as Trump was.
Trump has said all along that a resolution of the North Korean problem depended on China. Now it seems China is pulling the leash a bit rather than allowing Trump to get credit for a big foreign policy win. Instead, it seems plausible Xi is looking for something in exchange for his blessing of a denuclearization deal.
The Nork statement also includes Kim’s request to reunify the two Koreas. Bet China will be surprised with that.
“Our goal and will to do everything for peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and mankind remains unchanged...”
Which means...?
Here is North Korean official Kim Kye Gwan's statement today, showing they are liars, as always, and this time they are in a box:
"But for our part, we have exerted sincere efforts, raising hope that the historic DPRK-US summit meeting and talks themselves would mark a meaningful starting point for peace and security in the region and the world and the improvement of the bilateral relations as the first step forward to settling the issue through dialogue."
Then suppose, Mr. Full of Crap Kim Kye Gwan you explain the North's "SINCERITY" (sic) to have these Singapore talks when your very own advance team not only did not show in Singapore last week while the US team went all the way out there with White House Deputy Chief of Staff and waited and waited, that when called and contacted there was NO ANSWER from the DPRK, and no reply for a clarification as to why the team preparing for this important meeting were stood up???!!
They will play games like this with the US for YEARS if we sign anything with them. There will be no end to it.
Horse. Sh*t.
Kim just wants to play brinksmanship games and take ego trips.
He’ll be making excuses until the missiles are coming through his windows.
At which point the EU p*ssies and the mainstream media will be blaming Trump for his “intransigence.”

“One Can count on China wanting something in return for pressure on the Norks to deal. Why would they not? Any country would. And trump knows this better than the whole presscorp put together.”
Kim wants one thing....to meet with the US President on a one to one....one of those...”I did it” moments.
this is a masterclass on how a business person works. a MASTERCLASS. watch and learn people, i know i am!!
the norks thought they had him over a barrel when trump went to the press talking up the meeting and i would bet my house trump did that for EXACTLY this reason— to win, to lead from the front and to draw out the people whispering to kim to tell him to play the old NK game. they thought trump was committed and they pulled the ‘we are thinking of backing out’ bit to get the upper hand in negotiations. what does trump do: he still ran the military games with SK (power play), trump walked out first on the meeting ( power play 2), then wrote the letter written in plain english (power play 3) so no one can ‘read between the lines’.
note the letter. its a giant ‘you screwed up thinking i care about our meeting or the sheet of paper peace prize’. then the threat in the middle followed by ‘feel free to contact me when you grow up and want to have a real meeting’ and the capstone, his press conference talking about his ‘powerful military’. This totally screws with kims head. he cant trust the people in his team who told him to screw with trump. In one letter trump has informed kim, the team telling you about me knows nothing. all it cost was some printer ink and a piece of headed white house paper and his ink pen. also he signed it...another giant FU message. you think that giant signature is by accident or the shape of it (the sharp edges not curves? - nothing he is doing is by accident. that signature on the letter says this: i play fair but you have totally pissed me off, im done with this, call me when you want to stop screwing around and want to man up and cut a fair deal. most politicians would have had some ambassador or state dept write it, but no...trump wrote it. the message is loud an clear, the letter is from me not some faceless minion.
i guarantee you the norks will fold. sure, watch for some saving face gesture, some bs meeting of minds blah blah blah for the public, but make no mistake, trump has vaulted into the driving seat. he is not the guy sitting in his chair praying you will turn up, he is the guy you go to meet while he either turns up late or has his feet on the table relaxing telling you to help yourself to cold coffee and stale doughnuts in the corner. LOL this is classic stuff.
trump has completely turned a negative situation into a game he now owns. the norks have to contact him. it also plays really well for trumps voting base— he is not taking any crap from anyone. it states to his base, i dont care how i look im here for America. politicians would cower thinking their ego and base would be affected and would have quietly folded to the norks behind the scene, trump wrote the letter saying, ‘what did you say, FM, no FU!!’ LOL... honestly this is stunning to watch, and ole kim just lost...watch and learn people, you dont get any training like this anywhere!
there is also a giant message to the chinese (actually everyone) hidden in it. this clearly sends a message to them..it plainly says..im not screwing around here. i dont give a rats ass about what the press thinks, im here to win.
this is amazing to watch.

* * *
Yes, in a way Kim is a contestant on the Apprentice. LOL!
Obviously not the reaction they expected from Trump. Welcome to the new reality, North Korea.
They were afraid Five O'Clock Charlie would run out of gas somewhere over the Sea of Japan.
Trump understands China as few people do. Im quite content to let him run this show.
Well said!
Exactly.
This ain't your father's USA, boy...
Politicians would not make a move until they had internal polling data.
Trump is playing this Trump style. Know when to walk away. And be sure to flaunt your vastly superior nuclear capabilities on your way out.
And, PS, thanks for our hostages back. That was super sweet of you.
Let the demonrats chew on this art of deal making.
“Have the left criticized Trump yet for tormenting Kim so?”
Excellent analysis.
I think your cold coffee and stale doughnuts may be wrong though. It would be great to lay out a huge buffet lunch for the staff and guards. Instruct the Americans to act like that was a normal lunch and watch the starving Korean soldiers salivate and gorge themselves on delicacies they never thought possible.
They must eliminate all nukes and nuke research immediately, no phase in....PERIOD.
