With the 2018 midterms months away and the 2020 presidential election cycle approaching rapidly, Democrats are considering how to improve their poor showings in 2014 and 2016. The party has been debating - sometimes heatedly - how to do this. Which voters should they target? How should Democrats target them?
But here’s what’s clear: White voters have been fleeing the Democratic Party, and that’s a big reason Democrats are looking to rebound from back-to-back losses.
Whites have slowly but consistently moved away from the Democratic Party. These recent losses are on top of Democrats’ losses among Southern whites during the 1960s and 1970s after Democrats’ support of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
My new research helps explain how Democrats got to this point. I utilized survey data from the American National Election Study that spanned 1972 to 2012 and the General Social Survey that spanned 1983 to 2014 to see how the predictors of white vote choice had changed. I found that white voters’ shift toward the Republican Party has been driven by two factors.
The first factor is that growing elite polarization has caused the electorate to “sort” along ideological lines.
On the elite level, Republicans are conservatives and Democrats are liberals. The parties are clearly divided ideologically, and there is no overlap between the two.
The second factor is that demographic changes have decreased the ratio of whites to nonwhites in the electorate. The electorate was 29 percent nonwhite in 2016. This is up from 11 percent in 1976 and 19 percent in 2000.
This is politically important because the average white voter is more economically conservative and more socially liberal on issues such as abortion, gay rights and so on than the average nonwhite voter.

I think their descent into transgender bathrooms, forced pronouns, etc. has done considerable damage to them for not much marginal gain. It’s the same effect that Target experienced when they cratered their business in order to seek favor with a tiny number of fringe weirdos.
Just the ones that are here legally (aka, American citizens). I suspect the ones here illegally (aka, invaders) vote in droves for the Dems.

We all are. But the disaster at our border did not percolate from American culture. It rose out of elite one-world order types affiliated with both political parties for different reasons. American culture 2018 is vastly different than American culture 1978. The “silent majority” is finally waking up and I expect to see a revival of traditional American/Family/Liberty values soon.

I never changed. I have never voted for a Democrat in my life except once to cross-over into a Democrat primary.

Whites who are easily racially manipulated by Demonrats today, would have been just as easily racially manipulated in past racist doctrines and schemes created by Dims. Their beliefs about human beings run skin deep.
Most Americans didn't like the shabby treatment of the military and the overall trashing of American values we saw in the late 60s and early 70s.
The pro-murder platform of the dnc has driven more whites away....and should drive more blacks away if they were thinking.
The Evangelical vote has gone heavy for gop-e candidates but I'm not sure we're getting much return for our support.
Roman Catholics finally got smart and supported Trump. Just one of a handful of times the RC vote has gone to the gop presidential nominee.
If the gop-e was smart...and that's very questionable, a massive outreach to those groups should be sufficient to be a coalition of voters to win going forward.
For some reason, the left thought that the election of Trump gave them a green light to openly move to the far left on virtually every issue, from immigration to transgender bathrooms to the rule of law itself. I think/hope that they overplayed their hand, and that middle-of-the-road voters will finally see the nihilistic, anti-American left for what it is.
At some point I expect to see that verified.
Certainly in California, I think they vote in droves, but I can’t prove it.

You are right. The turbulent, revolutionary 60’s is what did it...I was there. The filthy race riots and anti-war (which was really anti-American) protests sickened all normal, decent people. Now many of those, their spawn, and grand spawn are wheels in the democrat party. JFK, Truman, and FDR would be republicans now.

Glad you responded, that’s exactly the sentence I zeroed in on. It’s a half truth. It was the drive for a welfare state packaged along with the civil rights that pushed some out and it happens everytime the pendulum swings too far to the left.
