Lava continued its steady advance toward the Puna Geothermal Venture Plant before stalling late Monday. The facility is shut down, but the wells there still present a risk if overrun with the molten rock.
“It’s not easy to predict where it’s going to go, and when it’s going to get there,” said Tom Travis, of Hawaii Emergency Management.
Flammable liquids have already been removed and the wells have been filled with cold water, but won’t be plugged until today. A worst-case scenario could be catastrophic.
“There’s a steam release, many chemicals, but primarily hydrogen sulfate, a very deadly gas,” Travis said.

They wanted a free lunch, but it looks like on the Big Island the free lunch will eat them instead.

The lava lied and said it was a land shark. The woman guarding the door said "Oh Walter! Land shark? I don't think..." But after that it was too late, because she had opened the door and let the lava in!

The wells tap into the volcanic nastiness that underlays the entire area. In 2014 when they were drilling one of the wells there was a blowout that spewed hydrogen sulfide gas for 30 hours before they could cap it off.
There are reports that it has reached and is streaming into the ocean, which is causing class and debris in the air. The live stream is messmerizing. I have it up on one of my six computer screens. Incredible action. And CNN!

WHAT could possibly go wrong? Oh, this.....
It’s an acceptable risk to build a geothermal plant because it necessarily has to be built in proximity to a geothermal feature.
Like we live between Cody, Wyoming and Yellowstone and because we’re near the caldera we have the benefit of a hot spring on the ranch that we use to heat the driveway, outbuildings, house, hot tub, and pool. Aside from my husband having to clean out the pipes every year we get free heat and that means a lot to our budget.
Totally worth it to us even if it means that someday we may need to leave it all behind if the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts.

You know, there’s nothing in the world like sitting in a hot tub in the middle of a -20F night, seeing the Milky Way in a crystal-clear sky and then sometimes even being treated to the Northern Lights.
It’s pretty awesome and even if we lose it all tomorrow it’s been an amazing experience.
