Volcano’s Lava Flows Into Power Plant, Sparking Fears Of Deadly Gas Release

Emergency workers in Hawaii are racing to protect a geothermal power plant near the Kilauea Volcano. Slow-moving molten rock entered the site and is just a few hundred yards from the wells. There is concern lava could trigger the release of deadly hydrogen sulfate gas...

Lava continued its steady advance toward the Puna Geothermal Venture Plant before stalling late Monday. The facility is shut down, but the wells there still present a risk if overrun with the molten rock.

“It’s not easy to predict where it’s going to go, and when it’s going to get there,” said Tom Travis, of Hawaii Emergency Management.

Flammable liquids have already been removed and the wells have been filled with cold water, but won’t be plugged until today. A worst-case scenario could be catastrophic.

“There’s a steam release, many chemicals, but primarily hydrogen sulfate, a very deadly gas,” Travis said.

FWIW, I can see a good use for eminent domain. Buy out the residents and make the land part of the near by national park. Expensive, but far less so than doing this over and over again. And HI can find a smarter way to deal with its low income housing problem.

Why are the gasses that would be released from the geothermal wells be any worse than the gasses released from the crater or the erupting fissures?

How about this, we return their “native” son who can calm the oceans and quell the skies with his banter.

Didn't they throw people into the volcano to appease the gods?

We’ll keep your sis in our prayers. And while locals took a knowing risk, I’m furious at the government and/or lenders for enabling this.

Good point but first we would have to prove he is a person. I still believe he is a V.

Probably the people who thought you should build Geo-THERMAL power stations near something, you know, hot.

Here, CNN has a live stream going. Had it up all night on one of my computers. Incredible. I hear chickens in the background--wonder if they have a lava-baked chicken recipe ready yet?

I think they are also using isobutane (or maybe isopentane) as a working fluid. That will be exciting if a several thousand gallon tank of that has a BLEVE...

The people who built houses on an active volcano, directly on, are the same type of people that build their houses on the beach to get washed away with every storm that comes along. The federal government should pay ZERO. If they are stupid enough to build their houses in obviously risky spots, let them simply risk their money, not ours.

Nature’s God continues to make a mockery of puny man, and we still think WE are gods. Fukishima. Hawaii. On and on. Yet so many unquestioningly accept the arrogant “man made global warming” absurdity. Will we ever learn?

“Who was the genius that decided to build the plant there?”

Whoever it was who noticed the obvious fact that a nearby active volcano could be tapped for cheap energy.

While I agree that there should not be a bailout, most people who build beachside build cheaply, knowing they will probably have to rebuild one day. Same applies here.

Ginsberg’s Theorem:

0. There is a game (consequence of zeroth law of thermodynamics)
1. You can’t win. (consequence of first law of thermodynamics)
2. You can’t break even. (consequence of second law of thermodynamics)
3. You can’t even get out of the game. (consequence of third law of thermodynamics)

You build a geo thermal plant to catch heat from the earth.

It seems to me that sometimes you get a little more than you bargained for.

I would hate to be the chief geo-engineer who placed that puppy.

Nature is taking over The Big Island.

Only fair, since Nature created The Big Island in the first place.

Here’s a link to a terrific, highly informative documentary detailing the history of Hawaii’s volcanoes. It’s a top notch doct. You will almost certainly learn a bunch of things you didn’t know previously. I would consider it required viewing for anyone wanting to know the story of Hawaii’s volcanoes.
