How Mitt Romney could wind up running the United States 6 years
The Brookings Institution ^ | 04-26-2018 | Elaine Kamarck

If, as expected, Mitt Romney wins his race for a Senate seat from Utah he may become the most powerful man in the United States Senate. As many of us remember, Romney, former Governor of Massachusetts, ran for president in 2012 and lost to Barack Obama. It wasn’t one of those totally humiliating losses—the map did not turn blue—but we assumed Mitt Romney would fade into history.

Well, maybe not.

The seat will remain Republican-held for President Trump come January of 2019, but this one could very well turn out to be the swing vote in the Senate. If Democrats pick up one seat, not two, the Senate will be tied and Trump will have to continue to rely on Vice President Pence to cast tie-breaking votes, unless other Republicans defect. In that scenario Romney, a frequent critic of President Trump’s, could easily upset the balance of power.

The reason? Republican Senator Romney will have what no other Republican Senator currently has, a Republican constituency that does not like President Trump. Trump came in third in the Republican primary in Utah in 2016 and in the general election a large number of voters voted for the independent and Mormon conservative Evan McMullin, rather than pull the lever for Trump or Hillary. For comparison, in 2016 Donald Trump won about 45 percent of the general election vote in Utah; in 2012, Romney won about 73 percent of the presidential vote there. Mormon voters, who make up the majority of voters in Utah, are perhaps the only conservative religious bloc in the country who are bothered by President Trump’s many infidelities and dubious business practices—Trump’s approval among Mormons trails behind white evangelicals by 14 points.

I say that’s why GB had a replica of the Oval Office built and was hanging on to TC.

I think GB had visions of becoming VP at some moment and fulfilling “the white horse prophecy”.

Sounds crazy? Perhaps.

But who builds their own replica of the Oval Office? If it’s not for a comedy show, which I could at least understand, that’s a bit weird.

BS, delusional wishful thinking. DJT could stomp Mittens into a 4 ft diameter throw rug if he wanted to. Mittens is a typical spineless RINO, the Rats would destroy him also.

Utah is run by the Mormon church.
They love open borders.
So does Romney.
Bush League Republicans hell bent on turning the USA into North Mexico must become extinct politically if we want to keep our country.
We may be stuck with Senator Windsock, but we can elect better Senators elsewhere.

Romney came in 2nd in the recent primary.

He came in 2nd in the presidential race of 2012.

Second is a good place for him.

Even if he did win the senate seat, he would be the JUNIOR senator with some 50 senators with more seniority. That would make it difficult for him to become the most powerful senator.

Wishful thinking. The author probably expects Romney to mount another run for the presidency in 2016. He has to try to win the senate seat first, however.

Yep, Romney has deeply held life long beliefs for whatever suits him at that moment. Ten minutes later he might have completely opposite life long beliefs on the very same issue.

"in the general election a large number of voters voted for the independent and Mormon conservative Evan McMullin, rather than pull the lever for Trump or Hillary."

A "large number" being 21.5% Ok, that's more than a small number, but McMuffin is a Mormon for crying out loud. I remember the days when Hillary was going to win and one of Trump's losses would be Utah.

All the more reason for Trump to unleash his forces against Romney in support of Kennedy for the June 26th primary. Dig up everything you’ve got and leak it. Destroy the traitorous piece of crap. NOW. Mitt hates your guts, and can’t wait to undermine you and harm the nation, Mr. President. Stop him NOW.

As usual, liberals pump up “the biggest loser” of the GOP to get them to win the primary. Well, it worked with Dole, McCain and Romney but no more.

I guess they like open borders because they figure that they can convert a large number of the immigrants (legal or otherwise) to the Mormon faith but I haven’t seen much proof that it’s working out that way.

By the looks of the vote in Utah, slightly more than half of Mormons decided to back Trump rather than McMullin or Clinton. Given that no authority figures were suggesting they do so, that suggests to me that Mormons in general are open to being part of the Trump coalition. Perhaps a little stroking by Trump between now and the next election would help the cause although probably most have their minds made up already. But I don’t draw the conclusion that there’s a widespread dislike of Trump in Mormon circles or in Utah, just less enthusiasm than elsewhere in red states.

Men like Romney, Kasich, Flake and McCain have been working against American conservatives for decades, positioning themselves as the only alternative we have to Democrats while acting in lock-step with the Democratic establishment. Now that we have the most conservative president since Reagan, these vermin have been flushed out into the open and they reveal themselves for what they are - enemies of conservatism and individual freedoms.

If Utah chooses to inflict the former governor of Massachusetts on the rest of the nation, that's their choice of course - but it will be at the expense of the nation. We will all pay the price for this idiocy.
